I have a '96 1500 with a 5.9 in it. It starts and idles fine, but when I put it in gear, it dies. When it's cold I can even drive it a block or two, but if I stop, it'll die. I can get it started again by holding the pedal to the floor, and keeping a little pressure on it, but if I let my foot off the gas, or try to put it in gear, it dies. Any thoughts on a solution?

Restricted air flow (air filter) or restricted fuel flow (fuel filter/pump) would be my first guesses.

I would check your IAC (idle air control valve)

Surefire symptoms of a failing IAC valve on the throttle body, however, you might be able to clean the throttle body, the IAC and its passage and make it work properly again.

It sounds as though it's not responding quick enough to meet engine idle demands when a load is placed on the engine.

I changed the IAC a while back and it seemed to work fine, then tranny started acting up, so it's been sitting for a few months. I started it up again this weekend, and it started it again. I'll try cleaning everything good, and go from there. Appreciate the help guys!

If your having tranny problems I would check your cats especially if you've done the plenum fix or are having that issue, your cats could be clogged
