If your just after sound, Put on a flomaster or any type of chambered muffler. They bounce the sound around in the chambers, making it louder, BUT, also increase cab resonating, which suks for a daily driver, IMO. Your dynomax is about the best flowing muffler there is. I had a single 3" dynomax truck muffler on my 2000 dakota r/t, ran a 12.4 with plenty to spare. Sounded perfect, for me anyway.

Exhaust is for performance, the sound is a side effect. And the sound I guess is preference. A low tone if that's what your after (sounds like a fart from a loose ********) is best done with a single exhaust anyway. A good sounding exhaust shouldn't sound like its falling out of the pipe but rather being forced out with each exhaust stroke. It should pop out of the pipe. But like I said sound is opinion. Performance is based on fact. And the fact is a larger than needed exhaust WILL cause a loss of low to mid range and loss of milage do to low back pressure and no scavenging since you've separated some if the cylinders from their flow mates.
I just see a lot of people that over pipe their engines and it sounds lazy.

No 5000+ truck will you notice any loss in 2" pipe to at LEAST 2.25". But I do know and have done on equal truck with a dual 2.25" and immediately changed to 2.5", the sound was 10x better. And with a 355 SBC, I couldnt tell any loss in performance, but could ten fold in sound.
Back in the 90s, mildly modified 5.0 Mustangs immediate change was H or X pipe and 2.5" BBK pipe....and that was small HP motors. Why were they so popular? Performance and sound.
Ive heard truck with 2" pipe dual, and it was not a good sight.

so as of now i have a catback exhaust system made by Dynomax. The system came on the truck when i bought it exactly how it is. It has a cat converter as well as a muffler but im not sure if it is a high flow cat or what type of muffler is on it. It sounds great at idle not too loud not too quiet it has a really nice deep rumble and i love it, but it just lacks some "umph" when you step on the gas. it doesnt sound quite right at higher RPM's and i want this baby to RAP when i hit the gas! i heard a guy who had a 5.9 and was running true duals and it sounded amazing! it had what i was looking for when he revved it up. so my question is if i go with true duals will my easiest route to go be buying a set of long tube headers? and will there be any problems swapping to long tubes? and is there any problems in general when swapping to true duals?
is this the sound you like, see his vid, found online.

Straight from flow master, street applications for duals 2.0-2.25 and being a truck operating at lower rpm and having a relatively low power rating 2.0 is plenty. If you want to argue with me that's fine but its hard to argue with a company that has probably invested millions into r&d and been a leader in their industry for decades

True duals here @ 2.25 and its more than enough. A good sounding motor is not all about the mufflers its all about the motor and what's been done to it.

I get a big kick out of people that put on straight pipes or no muffler at all on a stock motor and they think it sounds like a drag car or high performance motor and in reality it sounds like **** and a old gas flathead farm tractor.

That sounds like ass. For one he says high flow cats that have been gutted. What is the point in doing that? Plus running 2.5" true duals on an engine less than roughly 500hp is as rowdy and merc have said a power killer. There's a reason I run single pipe with my 2.5" Maggy. It's because flow characteristic with my straight thru muffler isn't really any different than with straight pipe. I actually lost low to mid power going from 2.5" flowmaster to 2.5" maggy. To gain it back is have to drop down to 2.25 to provide enough back pressure.

Edit: I don't have enough done to my motor to justify going with somethin like 3" or even staying at 2.5, but I already had the pipe and everything from my old flowmaster kit

This. I've heard very few straight piped trucks that actually sound good.

That's why I've retained my factory exhaust and tailpipe and went with a 2.5in muffler. lolz 3 in tailpipe FTW.

And whatever you do, put a damn crossover pipe in. Not only does it clean the sound up but it also helps the engine out a bit.

Thats one way to burn your rig to the ground and poison yourself and others in the truck. Make sure you have winners and marshmallows for the fire.

Such a damn waste... girl here had an ss/t without the original rims sadly. She blew up the trans 2x and got it repainted. Instead of silver stripes and logos on black it's now pink stripes and logos on black. She then proceeded to wreck into a trailblazer pulling into school and swing the ass around into a telephone pole. Think she scraped somebody else too
