Showing my ignorance, what are the maintenance recommendations for changing the fuel filter. It's location and the recommended replacement filter for my 89 D250 12v?

Thanks,

I don't know if this is associated with a dirty fuel filter, but I have the water in fuel light lit on the dash. The seller said it would go out after driving it for a while. I've driven it about 300 miles and still have it on. Any suggestions on what to check?
Thanks,

The fuel filter should be under the hood near the injection pump.
There should also be a bleed valve on the bottom to drain out excess 'water' that has separated from the fuel.

These sensors can be slightly troublesome.

You may also, indeed have water in your fuel. You can get a diesel additive to help with that, and certainly won't hurt to run.

Thanks, I'm not familiar with the engine. But looked around the lift pump and didn't see anything. I'll check again.

Thanks,

I'm not familiar with first gens so I had to google a picture or the engine bay
I believe it's is below and behind the intake horn under the brake fluid resevoire
It's seems you have to be careful unscrewing it as there's fuel heater wires connected that could be broken off
Id recomend Baldwin or fleet guard filters

Cody,
I'll have to study this more, apparently I'm not recognizing the part.
Thanks for the effort. I'm assuming all diesels including 1st gen12v have a fuel filter.

Edit: Looked on Oreilly's and the filter p/n is 33379 and the sensor P/N is 90-193. Now I know what they look like and I just need to locate where they stuck it....

Edit; found it under the body on the frame.

Located on the driver side looks like an oil filter. For the fuel filter you can use Wix, Fleetguard, Stratapore, and Baldwin. For my 94 12 valve I have a fuel pressure gauge and when it starts dropping I change it. I would highly recommend a Fass or Air Dog system. If you don't drive it very often you can change it 2 times a year at every 6 months. Power Service Diesel Kleen is the best diesel fuel additive period! I use it at every fill religiously, it lubricates the entire fuel system, boost cetane numbers by 6 to 8 percent, cleans dirty injectors, prevents injector sticking, less down shifting, smoother running engine, and helps with dry starts. Better to use it at every fill up to really see and gain the benefits of this diesel fuel additive. It also helps if you get a hold of some bad diesel that is contaminated. In the summer I use the silver grey bottle, for winter white bottle helps with fuel from gelling up when temperatures are below freezing.

Got it, thanks for the information. I'll see where I can buy the Power Service Diesel Kleen product.

Edit: I can get it in either 32oz or 80oz at Tractor Supply.
Thanks

My brain just kicked in, the sensor I'm suspecting is something like a float switch. It screws into the bottom of the filter which traps water and the water accumulates in the bottom of the filter. I'm I blowing smoke or on track here?

When burning or the fluid itself. My wife already doesn't like the smell of diesel. She doesn't like the truck at all. I'm thinking perfect! Cuts the odds of her wanting to borrow it.. lol

Yeah it does stink lol. I get the big jug 80 oz, good for 250 gallons. I pour it in a 32 oz bottle and fill up at the station, the empty bottle alone will just about knock you out lol, when driving in the truck. It's worrh it does a good job protecting the fuel injectors and pumps, and stabilizes stored fuel for a very long time. You can't be to careful with today's diesel fuel, not the quality it was years ago. Ultra low sulfur diesel fuel hit the stations June 1, 2006 and by 2007 it was mandatory at all the stations, supposedly a cleaner burning fuel.

What are you using per 30 gal fill up? If 80oz is good for 250 gallon? Then 250/30=8.33
80oz/8.33=9.6oz
I see adding 10oz per fill up.
Is my math screwed up?
Thanks,

I add 10-12 ounce to my 35 gallon tank (they say 16oz for 40 gallons)
They say you can double the ratio for faster injector cleaning so it won't hurt to out to much or to little in

I have a 34 gallon tank, I add extra enough for 50 gallons or more. Will not harm anything, been doing this way for years.

Here's another question, is there a 3/4"x16t hole inline with the flexplate teeth anywhere on the bell housing? I ask this because there is a standard magnetic sensor that seems to be some sort of standard industrial pickup available for diesel tachs.
