So I looked (not real hard but did look) for a thread that had tips for newbies buying a diesel truck. Reason I'm looking is let's face it, huge purchase and want to make sure it lasts. I've had gas trucks all my life and will be purchasing a new diesel this week. Just waiting on paperwork to clear now.

What are some tips and do's and dont's you guys have for a new diesel owners?? Want to make sure I don't get a big bill for doing something stupid that I would of never thought.

Thanks, and maybe this should turn into a sticky for us semi ******** guys.

1. Wait for it to get warm before you stomp on it.
2. Change your oil and fuel filters on a timely manner

What year truck are you getting?

Don't have a Ram yet, but general diesel suggestions.

- dont put gas in it ;)
- I run power service diesel additive because lubro molly additives arent in my area anymore.
- I find shell has the best diesel out there, with more likelyhood of 45 cetane fuel over the more common 40 cetane.
- use stations that get a lot of traffic even if the fuel is a little more than another station further off the beaten path. Tanks that get emptied and refilled more often have less floating particulates that can clog filters and injectors.
- Dont push your oil changes, diesel oil gets really dirty with lots of soot, my next truck will probably get additional bypass filters to make sure the engine has the most protection available.
- Give the engine a chance to warm up before hammering on it.
- find out if your fuel tank has a water separator, and if so use it. water is denser than fuel, it can rot out the fuel tank if allowed to collect and sit. Also hydrolocked pumps, injectors, and cylinders will make you sad.

really all that jumps to mind now.

congrats on the new rig.
