I'm new with owning a diesel (12 valve) and I had a mechanic tell me to run a tank of Kerosene every 4th tank. Actually 25 gallons of Kerosene with 5 gals of diesel. Is that a common recommendation?

You could in a 12v (I'm pretty sure it is an approved fuel)but I don't think I would
Kero is a #1 fuel where diesel is #2, I don't remember the properties off the top of my head but Keri is more crude/less refined then diesel fuel, it contains more paraffin then diesel and it also may have a higher sulfur content (ultra low sulfur kero does exist)
keroseme also has a lower energy content so you won't feel the same power
I would add 2 stroke oil or ATF to a tank of kerosene if you do choose to run it

I would just stick to diesel with 2 stroke oil personally

Thanks, I'm actually more comfortable with your suggestion. He said it would clean the injectors. With Kero being less refined I wouldn't think that would be the case.

Here are a couple more concerns I had with using Kerosene. First, there isn't any road tax on Kerosene, so how can it be used as fuel for driving on public highways. It's more than a dollar a gallon more than diesel in my area, which certainly doesn't make it economical. And I'm wondering if there has been off road diesel used in my truck since it had Farm Use plates on it. How many tank fill-up's will I need to clear the color fuel out? I'm sticking with approved diesel additives.

Some stations will tax kerosene for road use
If they do not the kerosene will be dyed like off road (this is also a reason I don't recomend using ATF, dye and possible friction modifiers that could do more harm then good to your injection pump)

If you run the tank nearly empty and refill Id imagine it'd be flushed after 2-3 tanks
Be sure to change the fuel filter when you think the dye has been removed as well

Some observations, I have run the tank down to the half way mark and filled with 15 gallons for the second time today. Both times adding some additive to the fuel. The most notable thing is the truck runs a whole lot better then it did. It accelerates nicely and I can move away from traffic at stop lights fairly easily now. I'm figuring there could be 10% kerosene still in the tank. Very pleased with the old girl getting 21.5mpg.
