hey guys, getting ready to buy an 06 or 07 cummins maybe. need advice on what to look for, by that I mean tranny options or certain years to stay away from maybe?? never owned a 3rd gen cummins so this will be new to me. will the auto hold up if I start putting more power to it or are they weak? I'm thinking 6 speed. any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Stay away from the 2007 with 6.7 Cummins / 6 speed auto combo. Horrible problems with those trucks, not fixed until 08 and newer.

yeah i've not heard any good things about the 6.7. gotta stick with the good ole 5.9. i've been looking at an 07 qcsb 5.9 with the 6speed manual.

06 and Up use a g56 manual trans instead of nv5600
They're pretty good trans, the clutch needs upgraded for any more then 60hp over stock like the nv5600 does as well but most of the aftermarket clutches for g56 come with a new flywheel as the stock one is known to warp
G56 don't take big power as well as the mv5600 because they have an aluminum case rather then a cast one

For awhile atleast lol
All depends on how you drive it and how the person before you drove it

would I have problems with torque converter slipping if I was hauling a 10k pound load or even a 5k load? on a stock auto tranny with an additional hundred horse?

I personally owned a 2007 with the 6.7 and auto tranny... LOVED IT!! It had 600hp to the stock tranny and never gave me any issues.. but i used my brain driving it..

i'm guessing thats where people run into problems??? put all kinds of power to an auto tranny then run the **** out of it and wonder why the tranny took a **** on them? my only concern is if I get a programmer and add say 100 horse will i still be able to tow a heavy load without running into problems?

I go back to stock or to a light towing tune in any of our trucks

H&S is one of the best in the business when it comes to canned tunes for 06+ cummins

Im sorry but I have a hard time believeing you pulled 15k lbs with a 600 hp cummins with a stock trans with zero problems.

It happened lol.. it was always in the back of my mind while towing but it never gave up on me.. im sure its been replaced by now though. And H&S is a company that offers great tuners for those trucks.

i've been doing some research and it looks like on a stock trans if I upgrade the torque converter and valve body i'd be good for maybe 150 horse over on the tranny with no problems? correct me if I'm wrong...
