I have a 1999 Cummins 24 Valve. Check engine light came on this morning so I read the code with the Edge programmer. Showed P0336 Crankshaft position sensor. Anyone have experience with this? Is this just simply a bad sensor or is this a sign of a more serious problem? Thanks in advance for the help.

Yea... It just a wore out sensor. I would go to local part store and pick up a new crank sensor. You have to pull the starter to replace the sensor though. Typically I can knock it out in about 20 minutes.

when you pull the crankshaft position sensor, check to see if it has a groove in it. Compare it to the new one if you have one already. I had that problem, and the tone ring had broken a couple of bolts. So I had to replace the tone ring bolts, which meant pulling the pan. There are (five) 5 mm flathead machine screws that hold the tone ring on. Cummins charges about $20 a piece for them, I used some Grade 8 (grade 10.6). I cleaned the holes really well with solvent, and use Loctite. I hope yours is as simple as just replacing the sensor. Best, Tom
