When the movie "50 Shades of Grey" came out I thought it was about the exterior plastic trim on my truck... :roflsquared:

Anyways... I think I finally have a solution: Forever Black Bumper Trim Kit Fender Flare Dye | eBay
OR
http://www.amazon.com/Forever-Black-Bumper-Trim-Dye/dp/B000FOIJXQ
I just finished applying it to the bed rail caps and it got dark, so I'll update with more pics tomorrow.

A few days ago, I cleaned the caps with professional strength Goo-Gone hoping that maybe that would take off layers of detail spray, wax and Mother's Back to Black and reveal black plastic, but it didn't...

Btw, Mother's Back to Black did work at first, but down the road it actually made it more grey. I am not saying anything bad about Mother's, just my experience. Keep in mind my truck sits in the sun for hours almost every single day.

I washed and waxed my truck and then applied the Forever Black plastic dye. It went on really easy and looks really good so far.

Cool. Never heard of that product before. Keep us posted on how it holds up. You going to try it on the antenna base that always fades?

I sure will.
I just installed a new antenna base a couple days ago. Mine was almost white, lol! :)

I was really close to ordering new bedrail caps because mine were so faded and ugly, but I decided to give it one more shot with this stuff. We shall see...

You can see in a couple of the picture how horribly faded they were. Btw, the Forever Black looks dark and shiny when it's wet that's why the pics look like that, it drys to a more normal dull black.

I was going to post something similar just to ask how to keep bed rail caps and plastic trims black. Glad I stumbled upon this thread.

Here it is dry and in day light. The plastic almost looks brand new! :party36:

Something I did learn though, apply one thick coat and do not go back over it with a second coat it leaves some slight streaks. You have to look closely to see them, but I know that is where I went wrong...

I am so happy with how this stuff performed! Next, I am going to go over ALL my plastic trim with this stuff.

Wow thanks for posting this! My rear bumper plastic foot step is a light grey from fading that I was debating on sanding and painting it or getting a new one, I'm going have to give this a shot!

Hey David, whats the "dry" time for this product? I have a project car and am wondering if I could use it on parts of the interior.

15-30 minutes dry to the touch. I haven't checked for bleed though... I would assume there is some, at least in the beginning.

Great. Thank you. Kinda wondering if it will work on the rubber around the rear window now.

That sucks about the wipe new... After trying a few different products, it only makes sense that a clear or a white product is not going to turn faded black plastic back to black. It would have to have some sort of color in it, in this case it's black dye.
This stuff is syrupy and pitch black. It will stain your hands and clothes, too.

Sure thing.
According to the mfg:
It permanently dyes all textured black plastic, rubber and vinyl with the same polymers that the manufacturers use.
Bumper & Trim Reconditioner will only adhere to porous plastic, rubber, and vinyl.

Btw, it looks like Amazon has a better price on it...

One of the problems I've had with some products that say they will return your "plastic" parts to the new black look is that when it rains, even after it dries, it washes off and runs down the side of your truck(and looks just like ****). I use Collinite 845 on the black plastic parts and they seem to hold up pretty well. One way to stop getting wax(that turns white) on the black parts is to mask around the parts before you wax.

Quick update:

My truck has sat in hot sun (it's been in the 80s) for a few days and the little streaks that I could see from overlapping the dye are completely gone. The plastic looks as good as the day I bought the truck brand new.

I'll update again after my next car wash (with pressure washer) in a week or two. :)

Exactly one month and a vigorous car wash and detail later. Not to mention sitting in the sun almost every day. The Fade to Black trim dye looks like the day I applied it.
No washing off or fading at all during/from the wash, and I pressure washed the truck for exactly 30 minutes...

:party36:

Edit: The trim is over 3 years old and looks brand new. Notice how it is even a little darker than my spray-in bed liner, which is pretty dark black.
