Its about finesse. You dont put the spray head on the motor, our guys do it from about 3 feet back. A spray nozzle on a water hose would roughly be the same. No less we use pressurized water on the engines daily.

Oh yeah, don't get the Gunk engine shine stuff. It's garbage, and turns into a sticky mess. I made the mistake, and after 3 weeks I had to reclean the engine.

I just spray everything down with undiluted purple power and let it soak. Then I'll wash it off with hot water on a cold engine. If you do it when the engine is hot, it tends to leave water spots on all the metal parts from the water evaporating so quickly.
As far as covering things and removing stuff...I don't even bother. Think about...we drive in the rain and drive through puddles. I just hold the sprayer back far enough where it's not blasting anything, and kinda spray over the sensitive stuff indirectly.
I wash my engine bay once a week, that way grease, oil, and grime never even has a chance to build up.

Exactly what I do....cold engine best....take ur time and don't hit any parts directly that you may worry about....by code everything needs to be water resistant. After done I blow off and then wipe all parts and then Sonus...Better than new!!!

I see people still perpetuate the misinformation that washing an engine bay is bad for electronics . You actually are at far more risk driving in the rain at speed which is NIL ! NEWS FLASH Your engine bay gets wet when you drive in the rain .

do not use a pressure washer , use a low pressure foam cannon and natural bristle brushes all will be well . FYI natural bristle brushes do not hold greases and oils and are available in lot of divers places like cooking stores under pastry brushes and vegetable brushes , art stores , paint stores stencil brushes are excellent for scrubbing details

I haven't yet had to clean the engine bay on my RAM but I always used a little Simple Green, with a soft bristle brush to agitate, followed by a rinse to get things clean on my Chargers. Never once had an issue. I stay away from the electrical stuff as much as possible and try to clean that stuff by hand.

Want to thank everyone for their advice, cleaned it up this morning. The Simple Green and a garden hose with a spray nozzle was a perfect combo of solvent and water pressure. I took the battery completely out and I'm glad I did, there was a bunch of debris and leaves in and around it. I zip tied plastic bags around the negative and positive battery cables, taped a plastic bag around the fuse box, and another plastic bag around the throttle body and alternator. I know that may be overdoing it but it was my first time and I didn't want any problems.
Started with the simple green on the outer edges of the engine bay and worked my way into the motor. I didn't let it soak at all, went right to the hose and sprayed it all down. I don't have any air to blow off the excess water so just used some old towels and paper towels and took my time wiping it down. There are a lot of nook and crannys that hold water but nothing to bad. All in all I'm very happy, can't belive how clear it is. Thanks again :favorites13:

I have detailed show trucks for the past 12 years and I'd personally never power wash and engine compartment.

Yeah I think a regular old garden hose is sufficient, don't want to be forcing water into places you don't want it. That's why I use Simple Green and agitate it with a brush to loosen things up, and then simply rinse it, start it up, and dry with a microfiber towel as well as the engine heat.

I couldn't agree more. If you keep your engine compartment clean and free of debris, it will make the engine last longer, and also makes cleaning it (and keeping it clean) much easier. I don't clean mine all of the time, I only do it when it's really dirty. I start by hosing it off and then spraying it with a good decreaser. I then use a good brush and hit all of the areas with my brush. After rinsing it off, I blast all of the water away with my Sidekick Master Blaster. That thing is worth its weight in gold.

Most of these guys advise is spot on but check out "Chrisfix" on YouTube. YouTube search "super clean your engine bay-Chris fix" the video in a split picture of a dirty/clean engine bay. Goes into detail of how to do it the absolute best and safe way. And easy to watch as in it's not boring actually kind of entertaining and professional grade editing

I will clean mine a couple tines a year at the coin car wash. Spray some gunk degreaser on the engine, drive it to the auto wash, apply gunk again, then rinse it off with just the low pressure spray, I dont pull the trigger on the wand unti I wash the engine bay crap off the outside of the truck.

I simply take my truck to the car wash and spray the motor down every two weeks. I don't use any cleaners or nothing. If you keep up on it when you first buy it there is no need for heavy cleaning. I have been doing this for years. Not once have I ever had a problem.

Cleaning is inspection

Engine bays should be clean this will allow for easy inspection as well. I use S100 and have for years on motorcycles and cars.
