I'm thinking about wet sanding and repolishing the truck. Whats the difference between rubbing compound, and polishing compound. Do I need to use both or will just the polishing compound be enough. I may be reapplying clear coat as well. so the wet sanding will be a must. in some areas Has anyone done this ? i've seen some you tube stuff, and I am impressed.. I know about the orange peel process, basically just wondering about the compound question.

Really wasn't thinking of cost, the price is exactly the same for both tins of compounds.
I have som good size scratches that I already touched up. Now I wanna sand them clear coat, wet sand with 1000,1500,and 2000. then hit it with the rubbing compound, then the polish. and finally the fukken wax,. Thats my plan any ways. By doing sections on the truck, and polishing the parts I don't wet sand. I think it will come out half decent. better than it looks now anyways. I wanna take my time, I don't wanna waste any of the wax, just makes more sense to me, To get the truck in semi great shape. before I use 20.00 a can wax on it. know what I mean?

can anyone answer the op's query? Froggy if I screw it up, i'll get the whole thng done.
Far as I can tell. The rubbing compound is for freshly applied clear coat, and the polish compound is for clear coat that has already been exposed too oxidation. am I correct in assuming that? Now I'm starting to get confused......

They have different abrasiveness.
Polishing compound is a substance that is mildly abrasive. It is used to remove contaminants from the paint and will also smooth the paint by removing a small amount of paint. Polishing compound will remove light scratches in the finish of an automobile.

Rubbing compound works in a similar manner to polishing compound, but is more abrasive. This means that the rubbing compound will remove more paint and is used for smoothing out larger scratches and other significant damage to the vehicle's painted surface.

And I agree with George, rattle can clear looks like ****. It might be cheap, but you will be wasting a ton of time with all of the prepping that goes along with it. If you do try it, do not get Duplicolor clear, theirs is horrible. Go to an autobody paint supplier and ask them what they have that they recommend.

So I use the compounds much like the sand paper, lighter and lighter. that makes sense. I'll post pix when done. Need a a couple warm days for sure. I only have two spots that need it and they are both on the passenger side. If done correctly, I will be fukken waxing the whole truck when done. :) that will be a long day, especially with the ol' lady screaming my name every half hour. AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!! And they wonder why they get beaten by other men.j/king. kinda.

can anyone answer the op's query?

Rubbing compund is more abrasive and appropriate for heavy oxidation and deep scratches.

Polishing compound is less abrasive and appropriate for removing light haze and swirls.

Think of it like 4000 grit vs 2000 grit.
