So when washing the truck the other day I noticed I must have hit some tar spots because I got some smear marks. What's a good product to use on this as that brownish smears are ugly lol.

Some of the best tar remover I've ever used, that won't hurt the paint, is 3M Adhesive Remover. Works fantastic.

What about if it's been on for a few months?

No problem if it's been on a few months. The 3M stuff will still take it off.

I found out that WD 40 is silicon based, which is what makes it a good lubricant.

However, if you use WD 40 on a painted surface, you are gonna play heck trying to wax that area until you figure out how to get the residual silicon off it.

Might be a dumb question, but I see autozone sells the 3M adhesive remover, black can, is that the same as the one you posted a picture of MADDOG? I know yours says general in the red bottle, didn't know if the one I seen could be stronger or what not and I don't want to harm paint.

STONER makes a product called Tarminator which works very well. I use that or WD40.

If what you saw was the 3M #6041, it is much stronger and not good for skin. It's used primarily as a surface prep prior to application of structural adhesives, such as is used prior to bonding two metal panels together.

It has a nice citrus smell but it takes forever to dry and dissipate.

Mineral Spirits.

Take your time,,, Let it do the work,,,

You'll need to re-wax after wards.

That pretty similar to the one I recommended. It can be used on glass as well but they say, "It will not harm most cured paints and is also suitable for vinyl and glass surfaces."

It appears that one will work as well for tar.
