my buddy has am 03 2500 5.9L CTD
he had trouble starting it in cold weather (5 C), so he got the fuel heater replaced, worked fin for a few days and now he has the same problem.
It will start if he sprays engine starter (ether) in his air intake.
oh and he leaves it plugged in over night
hes taking it back to the mechanic next week but i was just wondering what you guys think
thanks

Stop using Ether. It will make it waaaaaaaaaay worse. That is not a fix! He will burn up the ring, injector tips, pistons. Even if he hasn't shat the rings yet and he squirts it in there and hits it during the grid heater cycle he's gonna get combustion in the intake ... and that will be a bad day.

At 5 degree's even not plugged in that baby should be firing with no issues.

Is his grid heater cycling?
-The headlights will dim and the volt meter will drop with the vehicle in park / neutral.

What's the status of his fuel filter?
-Should be changed at least every 10K...5K on a stock filter is better though.

What fuel additive does he use?
-Diesel will start to gel around 20 F. So at that temp he really has to be using something.

How old are the batteries?

Any codes? Do the key trick even if the light isn't on. Some codes store but do not trigger the light.

Before he started using either did he have either white or black smoke? White smoke is an indication of an injector failure. Black is over fueling.
