Need towing help overheating tranny

I have a 2008 ram 2500 6.7 Laramie 4x4 with 92k miles. Edge attitude programmer and airlift 5000 bags on the rear. I pull a 20 foot enclosed 5 days a week easy. I just bought a 40 foot 5th wheel weighing 14k dry. Very early the tyranny jumped to 250 degrees and I feel I have very little power. The tranny reached 265 and this is in Colorado at night, 40 degrees....am I doing something wrong or are the edge settings off? I know I need more upgrades what would everyone recommend.<br/>

Are you using Tow/Haul mode?

I'm no expert but it sounds like you are slipping. Are you putting any additional power down with your edge?

That is a bunch of camper for a 2500. Are you running a bigger tire than stock? (Bigger tires will raise the effective gear ratio and put more load on the tranny)

Also, are you using the overdrive gear?

Knocking it back one gear would help the fluid flow through the tranny and keep it a little cooler. I had to do this on long trips pulling our camper with my HEMI that had the 3.55 gears.

Adding a high capacity trans fluid pan should help some if you are on the road and need to do something just to get you by until you get home.

That's a really high transmission temperature. You may want to consider a transmission rebuild with torque converter for, when the fluid maintains that steady high temperature the detergents and additives starts forming carbon causing clutches to break down. You can try by getting a larger deeper transmission pan like a mag-hytec. I have the BD Diesel deep pan for my Heavy Hauler transmission, that will give you about a 20 to 25 temperature drop. I would start out with a good transmission flush, with proper fluid change, also clean out the oil cooler, might have dirt in the fins preventing the proper air flow. Between 220 and 240 the fluids will break down, always keep it at 220 and under when pulling heavy loads. Good luck, hope you get it taking care and fixed.

Using the tow setting on the edge and tow haul when flat ground or climbing. The tires are a 35 toyo. I will be adding 4.56 gears and additional trans cooler. The high capacity tank seems like a decent idea as well. I feel ever since dodge did a fluid and filter change it ran higher. I've seen 220 a few times just pulling my 20' enclosed.
It is a lot of camper for the 2500 but the suspension changes increased the payload and I'm hoping gears will counter the tranny a bit

Yukon would be a good choice.
