Looking at a '14 Ram 2500 Cummins. Not sure if I want to go with the manual 6 speed, or the auto. What are the differences (besides price) between the standard auto and the Aisen? I'm aware of the torque ratings, but is the Aisen worth the extra $$?

Everything I have read and heard says the Aisin is as close to bullet-proof as possible. If I were going to cough up for the Cummins, it would definitely have the Aisin. I used to be a stick only guy, but now the stick gets a detuned Cummins and you have the wimpy DMF to contend with.

You'll have to get the 3500 for the Aisin, not available in the 2500.

I have the aisin and I absolutely love it. I researched this tranny for a long time before ordering my truck and i can not find any failures with it in the C&C trucks other than poor maintenance. I have talked to people who know trannys and they all told me the Aisin is better than the allison. Aisin is the largest transmission manufacturer in the world.
I have been watching on other forums and I've notice a lot of complaints with the 68rfe shifting hard or getting stuck in gears etc. There have been guys who have had to get there trucks flashed to fix the issue which seems to work for a while but some have the problem come back.

OP: are you towing anything? My 68RFE has been great. If you're gonna tow and keep your truck a bit, the Aisin would be a great option. Otherwise, the 68RFE auto is more than capable. Just my opinion. I'd go auto tranny all the way, but that's solely up to individual preferences I suppose.

You also get a bigger rear axle with the Aisin transmission I believe as well, not sure if it is DRW exclusive, or you can get it with the SRW truck.

If you can, drive them. They drive different, its odd but the 68 has more go off the line and seems to accelerate a tad quicker through out the power band. Odd due to the added power and capacity of the Aisin, but programming and torque management play a huge roll. On the flip side many have complained about harsh downshifts and general clunky shifts with the 68. $2200 is a lot of money and while I have no doubt the Aisin is a better trans, the 68 has proven it can do the job as well. If your not dragging a trailer daily I would get whatever you can afford, or what makes ya happy.

Whatever you do don't get sucked into a good deal on a 13 2500, their are some left overs at great prices but they are not near the truck the 14 2500 is. The new suspension and frame looks like a Tractor Trailer compared to the 13.

Good luck. Rye.

Again, unless your towing constantly and ALOT, the differences between either the Autos or manuals are really pennies (and i am not refering to the price differences here haha). I prefer manuals because i like the feel of control and simplicity. The tech differences look impressive on paper but how often are you really going to need to translate that much torque. I mean we are talking pickups with close to semi/CDL rating #s. For the things i have gotten to pull thus far, my 14 manual 2500 yanks things around with no effort at all. Maybe sometime when Im back home and not overseas I will really put the truck to the test and do some pulling experiments.

Awesome your doing your homework and hope you find just the truck you are looking for. I am sure you wont be disappointed with whatever you choose. This platform in general is amazing.

Just spec ordered a new 3500 SRW.

I've never owned a junkier vehicle than my current Ford 6.0.

Aisin was not available unless I went dually as well.

In my opinion if you can afford it and plan on keeping the truck a number of years get the aisin..

I personally dislike the rfe transmissions from 45re all the way up to my 66rfe...my previous truck had the 545rfe and they all shift funny and hunt for gears regularly..except my dads durango with 4.10 gears and 545rfe..and unless you do regular maintenance religiously they will fail..i had a 10 ram with 4.7l v8 and the seals were all shot at 50k miles...needless to say i got a new truck and while im happy with my beast as soon as they come out with a zf 8 speed in these trucks im gettin one :naughty:

Edit: My bad didnt quite sink in he was looking at a 2500...i'll just go now
