I have a new 2013 ram 2500 Cummins. I have never owned a diesel before but I am loving it so far. We are taking a camping trip in March and in my owners manual it says I should drive it 500 miles before towing and the first 300 miles towing should be at 50 mph. Is this correct for this big motor? My camper only weighs 6000 pounds.

Most people will say to go ahead and tow normally.

I was just thinking a 6000 pound trailer probably won't even work that motor. I don't want to do anything to screw it up though. I will be towing along side my buddy that has a Duramax. Kind of embarrassing telling him I can only go 50 mph.

I can't imagine you needing to hold back that much... The Cummins is broke in before it leaves the factory. The rest of the truck needs a little breaking in but 50 mph is a little ridiculous IMHO

Purchased mine with 12 miles on it, strapped the toy hauler on it the next day and went 500 miles at 70 mph. Never thought twice about it.
Happy camping!

My Cummins my owners manual for the 2014 3500 says point blank "no breakin period required as the engine is broken in at the factory" only warnings are warm up prior to towing and vary speeds on long trips while towing. Enjoy the trip.

A bit late for the OP no doubt but just to help others who might read this:

Yes for sure you can hook up and load up and go flat out from the start, and you likely won't have any problems that show up in the first few hundred thousand miles. These trucks are tough.

Or alternatively you can be gentle with your complex and expensive new machine, and treat it the way its manufacturer recommends, even if that means a few days' inconvenience.

Hmmm. Tough decision. But each to their own and it's your money.

Remember that there's more in the drivetrain than just the Cummins. I understand that the main reason for the manual recommending gentle break in is to bed in the diff. (And how come some people will quote one part of the manual, and ignore the other part? Must be written in different ink or something.)

If your Duramax buddy is such a twerp that he doesn't understand that heavy duty moving parts need to bed in, there's probably no helping him.

My 14 manual clearly states no break in required but insure on the 13 but dont know why it would be different
