I bought my truck 2 weeks ago, 2011 2500HD with the Cummins 6.7, I've put 1200 miles on it and today on the way home the check engine light came on, and it lost power, wouldn't shift higher than 4th gear. It smelled really bad and when I checked all my fluids the tranny fluid was smoking hot. No other lights or messages are displayed. Dealer can't get it in till Tuesday, any thoughts?

Keep us posted on what this was .

Yeah I think your tranny is the issue. I had a buddy that his 2009 did the same thing with 50k on his truck and I forget what the issue was but I know his tranny was fine but it was tranny releated and 6k in damage. It was covered under warranty though.

Check your error codes there will be one stored if there is any problems. No the check engine light doesn't have to be lit to have codes present.

Any of the automatics should have a transmission temp gauge installed so you can monitor the fluid temp.

If you have the evic you can see what your tranny temp is and it should display a message too under the message menu

Sounds like its DPF related to me which is a known issue.

DPF plugs and the motor will derate and the heat issue you think is transmission related is actually exhaust related.

It puts the motor into limp mode(its awful) but the truck will stiff shift ok
I highly doubt the DPF would be full after only 1200 miles unless its been all parade miles

Sorry for the delay in replying to this, they claim there was a major internal transmission failure of some type of valve. They said they'd have to to rebuild it. Not being satisfied with that I insisted on a NEW tranny which after two weeks of haggling I got! I also complained all the way up the corporate ladder and they re-imbursed me for my first months payment since I didn't even have the truck when I had to make it, they gave my the 7 year/100,000 mile extended warranty, and 4 oil changes.
I think they did there best to try and make it right.

Yes - sounds like you did pretty good here. Glad you got a new and not a rebuilt tranny and a little more to make up for the problem. Sounds like good service.

Yeah - problems happen - it's how well they respond to the problems that make the difference between okay and excellent.
