I bought a customized HD2500 from the dealer with 20" tires but the spare is the factory 17". I was surprised when the dealer said they called Chrysler and confirmed it was standard and would be ok to drive 200 miles on the 17" as a spare.

Any thoughts?

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new RAM!!! Make sure to post pics of that new rig.

For your question.... Its the overall tire size that is important, not so much the rim size. Most factory wheel/tire combos are about 33 inches regardless of rim size. So, even if the truck has 35s on it, what the dealer told you is true.

Clarification to Oversized Tires

Ok, since I didn't get down to the specifics of the tires, here goes:

4 x LT295/65 R20
Spare LT265/7 R17

Does this help clarify?

I would highly recommend not using it... they are way off in size.. here is a comparison, the 20's are 35.1" tall, where the 17 is only 31.6"

you will surely ruin your rear end or other EXPENSIVE parts...

you need to find a tire relative in size to put on the 17. 285/75 is the biggest i can find on the net for a 17" at just 33.8" tall.
you might be out of luck to run a spare unless its a full size 20. I carry a 35" spare with me at all times. its the JIC (just in case) tire haha

Why would the dealer tell me that they called Chrysler who confirmed its ok to drive up to 200 on a small spare?

What you have is what I would equate to a doughnut in a car.. Things are made to slip a bit without causing noticable damage, and in their experience most people won't notice the damage caused in 200km of driving. Damage will occur however,. What they are saying is 'don't use it unless you have to'. I would personally recomend you use a full size spare equivalent that you won't sacrifice your diff for if you have to use it. I know personally I have a full sized spare on my 3500 that I could drive 1000's of KMs with no worry.

I'd check around your local tire shops for a used 315/70-17 (35x12.50) tire. You should be able to find a worn out tire in that size for about $25 and mount it on your OEM spare wheel.
