I have a 1978 crew cab Power Wagon and am considering lowering it to help my wife and kids get in and out easier and for aesthetic reasons. I have leaf's in the front and back. What would be the easiest/cheapest way to lower it safely? Ride quality be damned this thing rides like a tank already. I plan on bagging it eventually but that's years away. Any suggestions?

I know many don't like them, especially on a front / steering axle, but I would say the quickest and easiest way is to go with lowering blocks between the axle and spring plates.

As long as you do not stack multiple (loose) blocks or go more than a couple of inches, I think you would be fine.

All it would take is some cheapo aluminum blocks, some new U-Bolts and off you go.

Impact on Ride Quality = Zero.

Next step in up in the difficulty rating, and potential cost (if you can't just pull a middle leaf and were forced to buy a new leaf pack) would be to see if you could just slide one of the existing leafs out. If you were not concerned with load rating and wanted a softer ride that could be done fairly easily as well.

Otherwise, you could have a new leaf pack built up and swap them in. Up goes cost needlessly if you were going to bag it fairly soon anyway. But this too would improve ride quality.

Just a few ideas.

I'd be willing to bet someone lifted it at some point because the 4x4s were never super tall.

With 4 leafs, your options for much lowering are pretty limited.
Yes, you can remove a leaf, but the chances of going negative arc on the spring get REALLY high, and you want to talk about a poor ride....

With a factory style 4 leaf suspension, you will never get even a decent ride.
It will bounce around like an old truck, because it is one.

Post up some pictures, as DD94 mentioned, the older truck really don't sit very tall stock, perhaps you have lift leaves already.

I count six leaves front and rear. Something I notice is that there is one leaf in the pictures that is thicker than the others. It looks like both spring packs have it.

I must say tho, it isn't THAT tall...why not just build up a set of side steps?
