I think if you get it at the right angle it just lifts out on one side.

usually 1 hinge will be solid and the other will have a slit. get it at the right angle and pull out the side with the slit then just pull the whole thing off. really suggest having 2 people because they can be awkward and dropping it really sucks

Open tailgate half way, the Passenger side hinge will have an opening (or "slot" as others have commented) that allows you to basically angle the hinge pin from the hinge cup as you pull away the tailgate. May sound silly but Google McGard Tailgate Lock and you can see exactly what we mean by watching the two videos.
