used this write up today to finally install my 180.......thats been sitting here for a LONG time.

My ******* couldn't find the drain (derr). Called Matt, he knew where to find it! LOL

lol, it is a little booger to find. Having drained a radiator before on my old truck though, I was able to find it quickly.

good thing about this forum..... someone on here has probably already done what you're planning on doing, and are willing to share some knowledge

That's what I love about forums and no matter how trivial some people may think a job is, I'm always willing to throw a DIY down.

I'll nab one asap!

I didn't lose much.....none from where the tstat is at (maybe a drop), most of what I lost was due to pulling the plug out really fast and the **** went everywhere. LOL

That's what happened to me sort of, except I didn't yank it out fast. I pulled it out enough to have a controlled stream then when I turned away for a second...the plug shot out and that's when **** went everywhere.

If you take that pic, I'll add it to the DIY so it's with everything else.

The Jet is going in this weekend, glad I ran across this, I've done one before on an old Chevy I had but its been so long ago it'll almost be like doing it for the first time. Thanks for the write-up.

Installed mine yesterday. Wasn't sure if I found the radiator drain plug, and the one I think I found was plastic. Didn't want to eff with a plastic plug that I wasn't sure about, so I put a drain pan under the front of the motor. Loosened the housing bolts, it drained a bit, 95% got in the pan, lost maybe a half gallon. Moved the hose and housing out of the way, swapped T-stats, put it back together. 5 minutes at the most. Wiped things up with some degreaser, this HOAT stuff isn't as messy as the old green ****. Mixed up some Zerex/distilled water, backed out of the driveway onto an incline. Let the truck come up to temp with the radiator cap off, kept topping off until the T-stat opened, topped off some more and went for a drive. Runs anywhere from 179-182.

My first post so I'll start by saying hello,
I don't have to change the fan temp settings with a programmer if I change to a 180* stat? So the fan will not come on until the motor reaches 195*?
Please explain !!:hmm:

You don't have to change the tune to put in a different t-stat. The only difference is it will open and allow the coolant to flow @ 180 instead of 200.

The thermostat will open at whatever temp it is rated at. The fan however will not kick on until about 200* unless you adjust that setting with a programmer. This wont affect anything on the highway as you are already getting enough airflow to keep the motor cool, but temps may climb a little higher than 180* at idle or at slow speeds because the fan isnt going to turn on until about 200* at the stock setting.

How does this effect warming up in winter? I can understand the benefits in summer, but michigan winters can suck.

Well all I can say is that in the vegas winters, which don't get as cold as michigan or alberta, my truck still warms up pretty quick, spits out hot air, and my efan never comes on I believe. The truck runs fine at the normal temp.

Installed mine today ... thanks for the DYT. Drain plug was a pita but thankfully didn't make that much of a mess.
