Oil Change Indicator System

The oil change indicator system reminds you that it is time to take the vehicle in for scheduled maintenance.
On the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) equipped vehicles “Oil Change Required” is displayed in the EVIC and a single chime sounds indicating that an oil change is necessary.
On non EVIC equipped vehicles “Change Oil” flashes in the instrument cluster odometer and a single chime sounds indicating that an oil change is necessary.
Based on engine operating conditions the oil change indicator message illuminates. This means that service is required for the vehicle. Have the vehicle serviced as soon as possible, within the next 805 km (500 miles).

NOTE:

  • The oil change indicator message will not monitor the time since the last oil change. Change the vehicle oil if it has been six months since the last oil change even if the oil change indicator message is not illuminated.
  • Change the engine oil more often if you drive the vehicle off-road for an extended period of time.
  • Under no circumstances should oil change intervals exceed 10,000 km (6,000 miles) or six months, whichever comes first.

Oil Change Indicator- Reset

The vehicle is equipped with an engine oil change indicator system. The “Oil Change Required” message flashes in the EVIC display for approximately ten seconds after a single chime has sounded, to indicate the next scheduled oil change interval. The engine oil change indicator system is duty cycle based, which means the engine oil change interval may fluctuate depending upon your personal driving style.
Unless reset, this message continues to display each time you turn the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position. To turn off the message temporarily, press and release the Menu button. To reset the oil change indicator system (after performing the scheduled maintenance) perform the following procedure:

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position. Do not start the engine.
  2. Fully press the accelerator pedal slowly three times within ten seconds.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” position.
NOTE: If the indicator message illuminates when you start the vehicle, the oil change indicator system did not reset. If necessary, repeat this procedure.

The owners manual on my 2011 tells me I can go 8000 miles on an oil change. Not that I would ever do it, but that is what it says!!

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but thought this would be better than starting a new one.

On my 2012, is there a way to either:

a. Reset the "timer" on the oil change indicator without waiting for the light to come on (if I were to change oil early for example).
b. View what % of the duty cycle I'm currently in (for example, my old chevy would tell me 60% remaining... or whatever... from within the computer.).

If the answer to both of those is No, I think this is a flawed system. :(

Thanks,
Andy

Welcome to RF

the oil indicator light appears to go off every 3500 miles regardless, so you just have to wait for it and turn it off when it comes on. Very easy to do.

with the fact that its set by mileage i don't think there is any kind of duty cycle for it to monitor, I could be wrong though

i asked my service guy, he said it checks the oil and then spits out the messge that it needs to be changed.

I just had my oil change done with full syn, i reset the timer/system when i drove off the dealer. so we'll see how it reacts. I usually get 6-7K on my vehicles with full syn.

i read also the 8k oil change mileage, sounds fine on syn oil. I changed mine at 5k just because it was its first oil change, but the "sensor" auto mileage reminder still iluminated at 7250 almost exactly, so it doesnt test anything its just another mileage service reminder, sucks really.

Turn the key into the ON position, and pump the gas pedal all the way down and back up 3 times.

that didn't work for some reason, so I went back in and toggled to motor info or something like that, and when I did the off on 3 pumps off, it worked then. So it seems like it is dependent on where your dahsboard readout is at.

Yes, on the one's with the readout you need to reset it in the EVIC.

Stupid system. Had the "step on the gas three times" system in my '10 Rubicon too. I like the EVIC system in my '14 Ram. Turn the key on and press the reset button. Makes much more sense to me.

Sorry for digging up a 3 year old thread, but thought this would be better than starting another one for the same topic.

Anyway, Is the oil chance reminder only on some models?

I have had my 2012 big horn (1500, 4x4, 5.7)for less than a year. In that time, I have put about 10K miles on it, and just performed my second oil change. In that amount of time, I have had no lights, chimes, or EVIC messages pop up telling me to change the oil.
Is it possible that my truck doesn't have the oil change reminder? could something be defective?

Hi muddy12,

On page 273 (see attached screenshot) of your Owner's Manual that you can download from www.mopar.com it sounds like your vehicle should be equipped to alert you when an oil change is due. We'd recommend visiting your local dealership if for additional diagnosis if you believe the indicator isn't working as it should. Feel free to PM our page with your VIN for further assistance!
