Hey guys, so I just got my double din stereo in, its a Kenwood DDX773. It still needs a little sanding and painting, otherwise I am very happy with it.

When i bought it, i wanted to option for a back up cam primarily to help with backing up to a trailer while also being able to be used as you would regularly. When i bought the stereo I just went ahead and got a flush mount camera too. I bought a flush mount one, wanting it to look at clean as possible and not tacky like the license plate ones ( sorry yall that have them :Big Laugh: ). The best place I can think to mount it would be in the bottom of the air dam on the tailgate.

I would like some input from others that have mounted a backup cam. I know if I put it here I will have to drill out the top of the tailgate to make room for the back of the camera, which may be more of a pain than I am thinking. Wheres the best, cleanest place to mount them?

Have you considered in the tailgate handle bezel the the 2013+ vehicles ?
Mine (14) have a fantastic view to hook up a trailer .

You may even be able to install the 2013 + tailgate handle bezel that's already modified for a camera ?

I agree yuhr tailgate handle would be the best place, I have a question what did you use for a reverse signal to send to yuhr Kenwood deck?

My PAC wiring harness had a backup remote wire so I just hooked it up to my radio harness. Whenever i put it in reverse, the HU automatically switches to the camera. The wire must already be in the factory harness just not used in my (old) stock stereo.

I also haven't looked into the tailgate handle cam in the newer models. Would they fit and mount up with the 3rd gen locking mechanisms?

I assume that those 4th gen tailgate handles wouldn't match up with a 3rd gen without a pretty significant amount of work.

Cdyt7717, I was thinking of getting a flush mount camera and mounting it in that exact same place. Can you get a picture of what the image looks like on the radio in reverse? I was also worried that I would end up with a camera too deep that wouldn't fit into that spot.

I haven't mounted it yet for that exact reason. To put it there, I'm going to have to cut out part of the top of the tailgate for the back of the cam. Not really wanting to cut anything, but I think besides swapping to the 4th gen handle it will look the best. Still working up the nerve, but I will post pics whatever I do.

Oh now I get it, you haven't actually installed the camera yet. I thought in that first picture that you were pointing at it, but now I see that you're just pointing at where you want to install it.

But yes, that would be the cleanest place to put it. I just haven't found one yet that I'm sure will fit in there depth wise. And installing a 4th gen camera tailgate handle will be a ton of work. I'm willing to bet that really nothing will line up, both cosmetically and mechanically.

So I got the camera mounted but not hooked up today, replaced the radiator, and t-stat since it sprung a leak. There was no trimming of the actual tailgate needed, just trimmed the fin on the inside of the black tailgate cover. I hooked up the camera for a sec to test the viewing angle. You can see down to the hitch and at least a few feet behind the truck.

Wish I would have seen this earlier. Someone did this awhile ago on one of the forums and it came out great. I've done it since and I've also replaced the camera a couple of times (stupid cheap eBay cameras). I am about to replace my camera with a non-flush unit. It's the type that has an adjustable angle. Why? Because what I've noticed is that the tailgate spoiler tends to have minute shape changes as it ages, with heat and weather and that is enough to make the camera change angles, etc.

I originally did the mod with a REC and Lockpick, but the lockpick kept throwing the airbag light. So I wen the MyGig route and that was really good, but I got tired of not being able to stream my bluetooth, etc etc. So I just installed an Alpine iLX-007 and so far so good. New Camera should be here tomorrow and it'll only take about 15 minutes to install since Ive already got the wires routed, etc.

It's been a hell of a time. The first camera was defective and i just got the replacement installed today. Works great. The view is a little father up than I had expected but still usable. Just need to get the parking lines adjusted on the stereo now because they're all out of wack!

Not too bad , I bet if you had a hitch installed you could see it for hooking up a trailer ...

Im not sure why my picture uploaded upside down...I do like that view a little better. I still need to adjust it a little as it's not perfectly straight. In other news, my 2007 1500 and my dad's 2003 3500 dually get the same mileage towing! I never would have imagined. We both averaged 12.5 mpg.
