When I was younger, my cousin had a 78 lil red express and it was the coolest truck ever. At least until he wrapped it around a tree while driving drunk one night.

Ever since then, its been one of those cars I always wanted, along with a 77 Trans am, the A team van, and the original batmobile. Well - I bought a 2008 ram a few years ago and I love this truck. I always thought about doing a stack pipe mod, but it never had the right look. All the stacks I've seen done were either huge pipes for diesels and/or they came thru the bed and half the pipes were not visible. The original lil red express was a stepside and dodge doesnt make those anymore.

So I decided I was going to do it and do it right. I chopped the front of the bed 7" and created a new "L" shaped edge in each front corner. I didnt chop it all the way, I stopped at teh body line so it would still look like a factory bed. I then ran new exhaust pipe from the header cat along the outside of the frame, but tucked under the cab. I ran my stack pipes and installed the chrome heat shields and a few mounting tabs.

I am finishing up the body work and the bed interior, but had to share a few pictures.

IMO, if you are going to do a stack, you are doing it right. Like to see it when you are finished.

Thanks everyone. I finished the braces and support mounts yesterday so the rattling has stopped. The truck sounds mean when I fire it up now - lol.

I am working on finishing the inside of the bed at the moment. I am intending to do wood side walls to smooth up the box and the exterior of the bed - where there would be "step plates" near the base of the pipes, that will be in matching wood with a Mopar "M" engraved on the step.

I guess I'll ask a stupid question, but you are going to paint it red? I think this is a sweet project, I wanna see the finished product... old school in new school.

I was originally planning to finish it in red and add the original door graphics from the lil red express - but the way the grille looks so menacing in black, I have decided to do the truck in gloss black with the original '78 midnite express door graphics.

I have cut, sanded, and stained wood slats to bolt on the bed floor between the ribs and I will be laying down no-skid-tape over the ribs which will give a useful, level, and good looking bed floor. I also have already made and stained wood steps for the exterior sides.

Wasn't the black version of the red express called the Warlock?

The warlock had the wood bed slats over the top of the bed, but there was a black midnight express that had the same graphics as the lil red express, but on a black truck.

I've seen it a lot over the last 30 years, but I'm not sure if it was a custom truck or a production truck. I know the warlock was production - but it was a little different.

I figure either way - mine will be custom :) but have a throw-back retro feel ;)

So I never updated this with the finished product. I was offered a great price when I finished it and ended up selling it within 2 weeks of adding the decals…
