I'm working on doing a muffler and cat delete on my 97' 1500 5.9 magnum and I was wondering how I could go about deleting the cat? I know it's possible to gut it but the problem is that it's a Y-shaped design (2 in, 1 out), so how would I be able to gut it/replace it?

If you're dead set on your truck sounding like it's shitting through a tin can you can go wuthering the Jegs offroad y pipe here:
JEGS Performance Products 31020: Off-Road Y-Pipe 1994-99 Dodge Ram 1500/2500/3500 & 1/2, 3/4, 1 ton 3.9L/5.2L/5.9L (except CA) | JEGS
Or you can also just cut the pipe after the cat, knock the innards out with a piece of rebar or something, fire it up to blow it out and reconnect the piping.

How should I reconnect it? would it need to be welded or could it be clamped with a connector?

Welding would be the best but if you cut it fairly straight you shouldn't have a problem using a 2.5ID/2.5ID adapter and saddle clamps or 1 good band clamp.
