Hey folks , in need of some quick insight. Will 5w50 synthetic oil kill my engine ? It's a 4.7 litre also .

Shouldn't but I personally wouldn't go higher than 5w40. Also 4.7 is a 3rd gen engine so those guys would probably know more.

When looking at multiweight oil, the first number is the weight when the oil is cold, the second when hot.

5 weight oil is thinner than 10 weight oil. In the cold, oil becomes more viscous, so a lighter weight oil is better in the winter when its going to be thicker due to the cold.

The first number is a bit low imo for use in vehicles that dont really see cold winters. I use 5w-30 but I run my truck in temps down to -10F every winter.

I only run 5w-30 instead of 5w-40 because I don't really see hot temperatures in michigan.

imo, 50 weight oil isnt suitable for vehicles that rarely see very hot weather like georgia or florida.

Synthetic wont hurt a bit, it will make any leaks that might be forming more apparent, as synthetic oil will leak in situations where conventional oil will not. That is NOT because it penetrates more than conventional oil.

I don't know where you live. but i'd be concerned that the oil will be too heavy to properly lubricate in a very cold climate, or too thin to properly lubricate in a very warm climate. You can get away with it if you see a bit of both. I have however run my vehicles down around in florida on 5-w30 just fine for a few weeks.

If you have both hot and cold weather, i'd say its fine to use that oil. You might have a bit lower oil flow to the top of the engine and a variance is oil pressure between cold and hot, but you should be fine.
