Default Rear differential noise
There is a lot of clunking noise coming from the back of my truck. I suspect it is the rear differential.the breather hose was dragging when I bought it. I suspect water got inside and messed some stuff up. Do you suspect it can be fix or would I need to replace the whole thing. Also, how long do I have to fix before it stops working from when the noise started.

Would a repair kit with suffice, do they sell gears to replace, or would the whole unit have to go?

You'll have to pull the cover to answer any one of those questions really. If you have stuff floating around in there it could last a day it could last a year.

They do sell rebuild kits with new bearings and deals and everything but unless you've done a differential before or are very mechanically inclined and can afford to have the truck done for a few days to a week or more, take it to somebody else or swap in a whole good rear. Differentials are very detail oriented and meticulous.

I was looking on RockAuto.com and there appears to by different differentials for my truck. How do I determine which one to get?

The Dana 44s are for the front differential if you have 4wd. Since this is the rear differential, you will need to use the 9.25", if you just want a direct swap. I'm not sure if you can stick a Dana 44 on there with a higher ratio.

Hey just lookin for some advice i have a 96 ram 1500 5.9l with a 9.25 rear end and im in the middle of changing both pinion bearings and seal and i noticed there is some damage to the gears on the pinion and im not going to use it anymore of course but i have a 01 durango with the 12 bolt 9.25 rear end in it aswell not sure if same gear ratio yet but if it is can the pinion out of the 01 durango be swapped into my ram 1500 any advice or tips would be helpful and to just say yes i know just buying the ring and pinion kit would be the best way to go and easiest but dont really have the funds for the kit cuz i didnt expect to run into this prob with the pinion being damaged so there is that haha

Stock AFAIK all the 9.25s on everything except the v10 and Cummins are 3.55:1. Should be a direct swap. Before you do that though, you need to check the ring gear on the carrier to make sure it's pristine, otherwise you'll destroy they pinion. You'll also want to baby that thing the first 250ish miles in order to get the gears to wear together properly.
