I got my rebel about 5,000 miles ago (3 months) and today I was driving down the road and heard a ding, then the console said something like "service electronic throttle control" and then I heard a grinding sound and the truck died. Then it started saying to service everything (warnings flying across the dash). After a few seconds there was a strong electrical smell. When I turn the ignition on I hear a loud whistle, a clunk and then smell wires burning (so I'm not trying to start it anymore).

I am sitting here in 105 temps waiting for roadside. Someone please tell me it's something simple. I leave for a week long trip to Cali in 2 days :\

If you smell wires and electrical stuff burning, I hate to tell you that I don't think it's something simple.

Check every fuse. Compare the fuse that is in each slot to what the fuse panel says should be in it - when a car/truck comes off the assembly line, they are shipped with just the fuses needed to start and move - the dealership that receives the vehicle puts the rest of the fuses in - if they put a higher rated fuse into a slot that wasn't design for it, and there is a short in the line on that fuse (and lets say its for the PCM or PDC or TCM or one of the critical lines), it could cause the issues you are experiencing.

Awe man that blows.

Hope Ram is all over this and then some .

Had something similar happen to me with a Ford, their actions determined I would never buy from Ford again. I know this bites as hard as it possibly can with a new truck and they know it as well. However the response for Chrysler can make this horrible situation less painful by acting quickly and hopefully getting you a loaner for your trip.

No news yet. The poor truck had to be dragged into the tow truck because we can't shift it. Dealer won't even give me a loaner because they don't know what's wrong with it and they don't know if Chrysler will reimburse them for a rental. Looks like I will be cancelling my vacation :(

**UPDATE** I called the dealer and asked for an update. They said the truck is "with heavy line(???)" because the motor is ceased / locked up. They will call me tomorrow with their plan.

The burning smell was the alternator burning up when the engine locked...

How can a $60,000 truck have a locked motor with less than 6K miles on it????? **sigh**

Manufacturing defect. Likely has a bad oil passage in the crankshaft. They make hundreds of thousands of crankshafts and as long as their defect/million made is a low ratio (like 150 out of 1000000 made), they are up to satisfactory levels according to industry. It is entirely possible a component internally was allowed out with defect as it was made between a good inspection check and a failed inspection check. Happens to EVERY manufacturer.

I like the Ram product which is why i bought it. And i agree that every manufacturer has some issue however, that doesn't make me feel any better ;) I paid a lot of money for this truck and i am on a work sabbatical and I am counting on having a truck for certain parts of my vacation(s). It sounds like this is going to be a really long repair and no suitable rental car will be provided that i know of right now. It's just very frustrating and very very very inconvenient. I almost want them to take that truck back and give me another one, who knows what else made it through that shouldn't have on this truck :|

That socks that the dealership won't provide you back rental even though they know the repair can take a few days. When the first time I took my truck to the dealership they told me that they were backed up and it could take a few days to diagnose the issue they provided me with a rental right away.

Sad Video

Here is the video of my truck being dragged onto the tow truck. Notice the back tires locked. We couldn't get it into ( N ) or move the thing so he just drug it onto the tow truck. Not something a new owner ever wants to have happen or even watch in a video :|

I think it's the dealer. This is obviously going to take a while to fix and they know it but they say until they can prove what it was and get an authorization from Chrysler, i can't have a rental. The more i think about it i may just hit up Hertz and rent my own. I don't want to lose my vacation because of this.

That's ******** that they can't give you a rental/loaner
They act like if your truck is running and you are complaining of something they need to verify. Your like new truck is dead that shouldn't be an issue.

With the 8 speed trans, did you try the Manual Park Release Pull Strap? It is under the panel just above the parking brake release.

Can you go straight to Chrysler ?

send them that vid of there product getting pulled on to that toe truck with just 6K on it

I do understand that defects happen, but my god they should be apologizing to you and jumping through any hoop you put in front of them

a loaner so you can go on vacation would be the absolute least they could do
