Ended up bringing home a set of spring compressors from harbor freight model #61654.

My plan was to use them when install my 2.5" lift but after seeing some reviews I'm questioning it. Has anyone used these spring compressors?

Or should I just pony up the $55 to but a pair from autozone? Renting in not an option bevause closesr autozone is 35 miles away and I need them for longer than 48 hrs

Try them.

A lot of reviews I've found on HF are older, and they have since improved a lot of stuff.

After reading and searching more I found that the max coil thickness is 5/8" and the max coil diameter is 6".. I don't know about this

I've used them on several cars. They'll fight a little bit by twisting, but they work pretty well.

I've stripped one of those out before and it never flew apart. I say try it but use something to tether it so it doesn't get you if it comes apart.

Yep, just get a ubolt with the washer that goes across both legs to lock it on the coil and you'll be fine.

Are the springs in the cars anywhere close to size in your 1500's?

What vehicle springs did you use it on?

I plan on taking the track bar and sway bar off and then I only need to compress the new stock spring to get a 2.5" spacer in with the axle dropped as much as possible. So I doubt ill be compressing the spring much? I hope :) lol

If the compressor breaks in 2 pieces (threaded bolt breaks) won't it render the washer and ubolt useless and go shooting across the room?

Uhhh... I've rented tools from Autozone for A LOT longer than 48 hours. I believe the policy is actually 30 or 60 days, I can't remember.

To be completely honest I was young and dumb this must of been 8-9 years ago a buddy and I were trying to get the spring out if his el camino I don't even remember why now but there may or may not of been a impact used in the process :roflsquared: (and I have now learned how to properly remove coil springs) my point is that we made the compressor fail and it still didn't come apart. On a coil over there isn't near the stress that there is on the standered coil spring it shouldnt be to much of a issue does it have to of the compressors or just 1 it needs to be evenly compressed on both sides.

Good call! Just called them up and it's like 30 days, thanks!

I'm gonna use the autozone ones and the HF so 4 at a time on the coil just in case one fails lol :)

Haha glad I could help. I've rented the autozone ones a few times. They work well, just make sure you take both sides down evenly.

You guys think it would be a decent idea to start a sticky where we all put up brief reviews of the HF tools we have used?

Like ya or na on a tool and why... I could start it with reviewing about 10 or so different HF tools

If your ona budget hf tools can work, but if you can afford the better tools, buy the better tools!

hf tools are fine but they may not last as long as others or have a lifetime warranty

All of their hand tools, like wrenches and sockets, come with a lifetime warranty, just like craftsman or snap on.

Reminds me of the expression, "somehow every tool I've bought from Harbor Freight ends up becoming a hammer." :)

My luck has been pretty decent with HF tools, but they aren't top shelf stuff to be sure. Things like tarps, bungee tie downs and utility knife razor blades - HF is the place I go to first.

I like having a set of their wrenches, sockets, and basic hand tools around. If I ever need to modify a tool to make it work, I can use one of those, then just go get a new one on the warranty.
