Hey all, I'm going to start working on my 2014 Ram 1500 this spring (level kit, Mufflex dodm80). I also want to start changing my own oil, rotate tires, other routine maintenance. I have one boy and another on the way. I want them to be able to do basic car Maintenance on their own so I gotta learn so I can teach them. I also need tools for maintenance on my riding mower and other household projects.

I have a three car garage so I have room for tools. I want to start collecting essential tools to complete the tasks I listed above. What do you guys consider essential tools?? Thanks for the help!

Two sets of 6 ton jack stands.
4 ton jack
Torque wrench 1/2" and 3/8
Breaker bar 1/2
Swivel socket and extensions
Deep impact sockets
Regular socket set
Wrench set
Vice grips
Vice
Spring compressor
Allen key socket set
Torx socket set
Various screwdrivers
Pry bar
Couple different size mallets
C clmap
Oil filter wrench
Oil pan and funnel
Cheap obd2 scanner

That should be a good enough start to get by... However if later on you want more I would look into air compressors and air tools. Lots more tools come in handy but this is a good start if you don't have any.

Wow. Nice lists! I already got the fridge and beer. I plan to get an air compressor for air tools. What's a good size air compressor?

I do everything i need with a porter cables 6 gallon. It's handy because it's portable. Do I have to wait occasionally for the air volume to recharge? Yes, but not as often as you might think, and I'm not running a professional shop...lol If I used it a bit more than i really do, I would probably get a wheeled 20 or 30ish gallon model.

one caveat, I have a cordless impact gun (DeWalt) that seriously kicks ass, so I don't use the compressor for running an impact gun.

If your going to use air compressor for air tools I would recommend something that can handle 5scfm at 90psi and 8 gallon or higher.
I use Ingersoll Rand air tools. They were good price and very good tools. Treat them right and they will last forever.
Otherwise if you wanna spend the money snap on.
Or aircat is good as well I have a few of those and they are priced well.

A good general way to get a decent amount of tools is something like a Craftsman socket set. They make a lot of different count pieces for every budget. That is how I started. Knocked out a big portion of sockets and basic tools and I slowly added other stuff.

I also upgraded to a 52" Husky Tool Chest.

Small fridge is ok. You DO want the friends to eventually leave. Also, lotsa beer to get your wife to pose nekid? Is that for you, or is your wife a big ol' gal? ;)

It sure didn't take long for this train to fall off the track. And you forgot to put "and" between stripper and pole :naughty::naughty:

Ramps for when you want under the truck bur won't be taking a wheel off.
Wheel chocks because seriously who trust a parking brake anyway?
Shop manual for each of your cars/trucks.
Soldering iron or gun for wiring.

Didn't see trim tools listed but maybe it was. You'll want them to remove clips so you don't break them.
