I have a 2001 5.9 liter automatic( ****** I know) and it slipped and had to be towed back home. Back about 2 months ago I sunk it up to the rear axel and rocked it out of the mud to no avail eventually I just towed it out with the tractor. But two weeks after I was driving and it slipped and eventually it got to where it wouldnt move. I start it up every now and then to keep the battery from dieing and it goes fine in fowards but makes a very loud noise in reverse but it still works. I havent taken it on the road for fear of having to have it towed. So what I want to know is, is the transmission completely shot or what?

Check your fluid level first, otherwise I'd be leaning toward you having overheated it and destroyed the clutches/bands.
