OK guys, I'll be buying a new rifle soon for this years deer hunt. Went last year with the father-in-law and will be going again this year. Last year I borrowed an old Remington .270 but want my own gun. I have committed to the Savage 11/111 with Nikon scope but have been bouncing around on what caliber to go with. I've done a lot of reading on rifles and for under $500 with a decent scope, I don't think I can go wrong with the Savage.

I'm looking at either .270, 7mm-08, 30-06, or .308. What are your thoughts? All of them are roughly the same price. I'm leaning towards the 30-06 or .308 but feel it might be too much. What are your thoughts?

I had a 270 when I had time to hunt and it had more than enough to put down a deer. Hopefully will pick another one up soon once we get our house built and I can get the trails cut back down on our land

Can't go wrong with either.

Will you be hunting in the woods or open fields with potential long range shots?

.270 has great ballistics, but I'm a .308 guy. One of the best well rounded rounds out there. If you want a greater selection of loads, the 30-06 would be my next choice.

I always consider what is available locally for ammo. Both of the 30 caliber choices are on every shelf around here.

I always consider recoil when choosing a rifle so that will be coloring my advice.
If you reload then I recommend the 7mm-08 because you can get some terrific performance with milder recoil than the others.
If you don't reload then I'd say go with the .308 for a wider selection of ammunition.
Any of the ones you mention will be fine for hunting deer.

Great feedback guys. I'm leaning towards .308 right now. I do agree that I can't go wrong with any of these choices...

If we go back to the same place as last year, there's opportunity for both.

I have 4 30-06's and one .308. During the great gun scare last year I could find 30-06 without much issue, .308 was impossible. They're so close in every different way that I prefer the 06 just because it was easier to find ammo.

Good choice on the Savage 111/11. I love the savage rifles, really accurate and a good price. And no I dont say that because I worked for them lol. My savage axis .223 is my favorite rifle I own.

I have always been told by my hunter friends .270's work best for deer but I have never gone deer hunting so Im not sure if thats true. .270 wsm seems very hard too find up here. I would probably just go with whatever has the most available ammo.
