6 months is probably around the age we started with our border collies. You have to make sure that they are old enough to not get hurt too badly when they get kicked for the first time. Have fun with it, there is nothing better than just being to sit around on your horse while your dog does all the real work!

My heeler mix is nothing but my companion. I got him at 1.5 years from the shelter and he picked up every damned thing I tried to teach him right quick.

He's almost 8 now, and still sharp as a tack (just a lot more lazy)

I have a Border Collie/Blue Heeler mix named Rooster. Short for Marshall Rooster Coburn.

Damn good dog.

My ACD, May She Rest In Peace, picked up herding early but didn't get the chance to do it very often.
