Question Elk hunt
Friend and I were drawn for archery elk this year. It's been a very long time since I've been out archery hunting for elk. What do you guys prefer for broadheads? Do you like mechanical or fixed blade? Brand?

I use rage mechanicals for white tail deer and I've been very happy with them but on a hunt like that I'd probably go fixed blade

Tappin It...

I've used mechanical for mule deer and smaller game, just nothing as big as an elk. Just need to know if I need to change my setup up any more.

I use grave digger which is half mechanical half fixed on deer they leave huge holes. My friend who shot an elk last year used muzzy fixed broad heads.

You can use both, but all depends on your setup and how tuned your bow is. If your bow isn't tuned properly, mechanicals give that forgiveness whereas a fixed blade will show the faults being inaccurate. Tune the bow then decide your max distance. But practice practice practice, you owe it to yourself and the animal.

I quit using mechanical broad heads after losing a nice deer once. We tracked that deer and searched for two days. unfortunately, the blood trail stopped after few hundred yards. The next year, we stumbled upon the skeleton in a place we never would have expected to find it. the arrow was still in the bones right between two ribs, but the mechanical broad head never expanded.
With the small hole from not opening, we figured that was why the blood stopped so quick.

After that I went to Muzzy broad heads and never used a mechanical again.
