I'm about to pull the trigger on a catch can but I'll need to smog my truck this year. Does anyone know if it'll pass if I install a catch can?

It should - you can always remove it real fast- the egr is still putting the recycled air back in- you are just removing the oil from it.

If logic prevails it should be no problem, since the PCV function remains unchanged.

Of course you're in Corruptifornia and the CARB is out of control !!!

You should be good to go with the catch can. I have one from Billet Technology. One bolt and two hoses, and it is on.

Are they easy to pull out and swap if it does cause issues. Are there brands I should look at as opposed to others?

Billet Tech is a good brand and their bracket is easy to deal with. Matt at Moe's sells them.

Sorry I didn't see you had a 4.7. Don't know the brand you asked about.

A catch can is simply a condenser converting crankcase vapors to liquid. Save your money and the possibility of failing CA emission laws.

In a world of bad advice this is right up there with telling Napoleon it would be good to invade Russia....

Your PCV is still working with a catch can therefore you have not defeated your smog control at all--and every gas station that does repairs is compelled under CA state tyranny to accept spent oil for recycling, so emptying the catch can is "sustainable" too.

OP, I moved from Arizona to CA last year. During my CA SMOG check I failed because of my BT Catch Can. If I were you don't install one until pass or take it off before you get checked. You will not pass and waste money/time with getting retested (I had to remove the Catch Can to pass). Just speaking from my experience.

I knew the Corruptifornia Air Resources Board (CARB) was out of control, but that's just in-bred and "ignrt".

In Califunny, if you've added or changed anything to the motor the added item has to be certified and approval stickered to pass the Smog test. You can get lucky and find a station that doesn't see the added item. If you are concerned you can request the Smog station to first check for any violations and/or plug it in to see if the PCM passes before they hook it to the state machine. There should not be a charge for this pre-check.

Really!

Tell me, what do you think a catch can catches?

Nothing! Yep, absolutely nothing.

A catch can does one thing really well, it separates $100 plus dollars from its owner. Think about it, $100 plus bucks for a small aluminum can and some hose!

Crankcase vapors pass out of the PCV and routes back into the engine to be burned. Adding a catch can is adding a condensing action converting the vapors to a liquid.
