New here, with my '17 Big Horn and 5.7L Hemi.

Ive always subscribed to taking the factory fill out after 500-1000 miles and Im a fan of synthetic oil even with the extra cost (I dont drive much, so its probably not necessary, but with 2 oil changes per year I dont mind the extra cost)

That being said, Ive read a ton of pages in this thread. RedLine seems to be "the choice", but Im still debating 5W-20 vs 5W-30. Being a '17, I assume I have MDS *and* VVT? Will a heavier weight oil mess with either (or both) of those systems?

I do see the benefits of running 30 instead of 20, but I dont want to mess up anything else (especially under warranty). If 30 wont muck with the systems, Ill order up some RedLine 5w-30 pretty soon (300 miles on my truck already)

Thanks in advance.

Not sure what to think about this...

https://www.google.com/amp/www.auto...-ram-1500-spied-looking-like-a-dodge.html/amp

Looks like the Hemi survived until at least 2019

In the straight on picture it resembles the current durango. I like that look on the durango but my TRUCK looks way better than that one.

The current body style of the ram's is the best yet. And the HD's are even better with that slightly forward lean look on the front . The current ram is COMPLETELY different than ford and chevy. ... that 2019 thing is looking a little to busy for my taste.

You could run 40w with no issues. But that engine will love a good 5w30. 20w is for remote control airplanes, not a 400HP V8.

And no, MDS or VVT will never know the difference

Thanks for the replies (Re 5w-20 vs 5w-30)

5w-30 is a lot easier to find around here....local Walmart has Pennzoil Ultra Platinum in 5w-30. Or Pennzoil Platinum (non-Ultra) in 5w-20.

Im thinking either of those (still not sure if I wanna do 30 while still under warranty) with a Royal Purple filter. Truck currently has 300 miles on it, I figured Id change around 500-750 depending on when I get there (dont want to be changing the oil in the cold weather)

Good plan?

I'd still wait till 2000-3000 miles. Red Line recommends this for the first oil change. You're not going to hurt anything and it gives the rings time to properly seat.

Just be aware, Red Line 5w30 does not carry the Mopar MS-6395 certification. Should you run in to engine issues and they ask for proof of maintenance they could, legally, deny warranty claims for any oil related issues.

Red Line 5w20 does carry the cert.

Thanks for that note. Ill definitely be checking any oil (20 or 30) for the correct Mopar spec before I purchase.

Another note on the mopar oil certification. The cert doesnt care if your engine last past the warranty.

JMO

EDIT:

I know that is a little.... extreme. Joke aside. IMO the cert is not that important. Just do your homework on oil for your hemi

No Redline viscosity has the MS 6395 cert. They are "recommend for MS 6395". The only oils I know of that are truly 6395 certified are Shell products which include Pennzoil and QS, and I believe Castrol.

I believe royal purple also has the MS6395cert.

My truck knocked on API / ms6395 cert oil, and purred on no cert oil, you can take that cert and shovel it.

Which certified oils?

Pennzoil Ultra in 5W-30 is readily available and thats what I was going to try for my first change.

Someone on this forum just had an engine failure, and was running Mobil1, which is not ms6395 certified. The way I understood what he wrote was that once an oil sample was verified that it wasn't the oil that caused the failure the dealer agreed to year it down and see what happened. The key is getting an oil sample, oil wasn't the problem.

The Pennzoil Ultra does indicate that it meets that Chrysler spec, however I'm pretty sure the owners manual says something like Chrysler "recommends" the use of a motor oil that meets MS6395, see oil filler cap for appropriate grade.
Recommends is different from required. If the the use of an oil that meets that spec is REQUIRED, per the owners manual, doesn't give you any wiggle room should there be any kind of an oil related issue. If "recommends" is the wording, as long as an API certified motor oil of the appropriate grade is used, I wouldn't worry.

As a side note Mobil 1 did in fact meet all Chrysler specs several years ago, when Mobil products were factory fill on a lot of Chrysler vehicles. Now that Fiat/Chrysler is in bed with Shell Oil rather than XOM, the Mobil 1 products stopped displaying Chrysler certs.

List of MS-6395 oils.

IMO the MS-6395 cert isn't what you have to worry about as far as warranty is concerned, its the API licensing. RL and Amsoil SS do not have the API donut although SS could easily pass API SN. I've stated this before, the dealer would have a harder time denying warranty work on a top tier oil than on a non API certified $1.29/qt oil you bought on craigslist.

Quite frankly at 4.5 years of ownership of my truck, I only have 6 months left of powertrain warranty anyway. Hell knowing my luck, my Hemi would grenade 1 day after the warranty expires anyway:emotions122:
