Folks like to have the extra ecu for a little insurance. Its quick to swap out before going to the dealer but you can always keep the unlocked ecu in all the time. Before you go to the dealer restore the stock file back to it. Then re-tune it once home.

Can the dealer see it was tuned if an unlocked ecu is in the truck with the stock file on it?

The dealer would treat the unlocked ecu as a factory unit. they wouldn't know it is unlocked.

Ok thanks I might just save the money and do the exchange. This is my 5th ram and never had to have warranty work done on any of them anyways. No different than the 2014 and older trucks that didn't need an unlocked ecu.

If I did an exchange, that would mean my truck would be down during the shipping back and forth correct? How does the tune take place? Does the ecu come to me tuned and its simply plug and play?

Here's how the exchange works. You'll get a tuner first. it'll have a special serial number on it. you use that serial # on the diablo site to fill out the ecu info. Then you will get the new ecu and have 14 days to send your old ecu back. No downtime.

Well give them a good swift kick in the balls for me, and tell them to hurry the hell up already. There isn't enough instant gratification going on. LOL.

Thanks for the info good sir! :favorites13:

Torn on this. Have a 2017. Getting close to getting bigger tires and wheels. Don't really feel the need to pay the dealer to flash my odometer if I can just put that money towards a tuner. Hemifever doesn't seem to be too afraid of warranty issues, but many others on here would never do it. I tend to be more on the risk it side usually.

Would there be any difference between say a 2014 with its unlocked ecm being tuned, then back to stock for a dealer trip then re tuned. Versus me buying the new unlocked ecm and giving mine back and doing the same thing. I really don't think they will dig into it enough to ever tell. Unless like my engine failed completely and it was a huge issue they might. But the odds of that are probably the same as me getting hit by a car walking down the road so I"ll roll the dice.

Had a custom tune on my previous truck a silverado using a Diablo tuner and Diablolew so I'm familiar with the process. But that truck was out of warranty when I bought it.
