I washed my truck this weekend and the side steps seemed to have water trapped underneath the rubber foot steps and then froze due to the cold weather.

Is this normal or should I not wash the truck in the winter time due to water freezing and causing issues on the side steps.

What if I dont have access to a heated parking lot, is it problematic to let water freeze in there?

Also - should water not be getting into there?

What kind of side steps?

I would guess it probably is not unusual, the rubber pads are held on by clips in holes drilled in the step. The rubber pads are male and clips female. Water can migrate along the step to where the clips are just from washing but more likely driving down the road in rain and snow. The front tire kicks up a lot of water and right behind it is the step bar.

If you have the plastic end caps I guess you could remove one and drain the water. If you have solid welded ends probably just drill a hole in the bottom rear of the step and let it drain. If you want you could find a little rubber plug to fill the hole you drilled between draining.

Probably dirt caught between the “tab” mounting bracket and the body mounting surface.

Maybe if you do it again, use leaf blower or compressor to blow out water underneath?

Honestly if the car wash is causing water penetration water and salt coming off the road will make its way in there as well. Especially at highway speeds. Better to have to replace caps on steps than have a truck caked in salt and sand all winter.
