'14 1500 CC 4WD Hemi running 89 octane. I got 22.9mpg last week on a highway trip at 65-70mph. Didn't do anything special other than using the cruise control. Aroudn town I get 15-16mpg.

Hey all, drove 224.5 miles yesterday up to a distant town to pick up some parts and back. Nearly all hwy miles, mostly interstate-style, other than some through-town miles, some stop signs, etc. No cargo. I got right at 17.0 mpg. (5.7 Hemi, 6 spd, 4x4, 3.55 gearing, not a lot of options, tires properly inflated) which is about what I got the last time I checked it. It runs fine and great AFAIK. On this run it was not in ECO mode all that much due to terrain/winds, or whatever. Sometimes it was, other times not. Speed was generally 68-73 mph.

My old reg cab 89 GMC 4x4 with all the options and 5.7 throttle-body, 4-spd, similar gearing, original dual-bed bead-style catalytic converter and about 275k mi ....gets almost the same or a scootch better! Every time I've checked it in the past for 'average' mileage it was around 16.5 and I've gotten fairly high on straight interstate driving especially if I 'draft' a semi! But overall, most of my driving is hwy.

I was going to rant about the technology not being very effective, but I just went out and looked at the doors and it appears the dodge is about 1000 lbs heavier (6600 lbs). Didn't realize there was that much weight difference (if I'm reading the stickers right). There's a lot greater use of thinner metal, plastics and aluminum than my GMC, but OTOH, trucks in general have increased about 15% larger in size too over the years!!. And sure the Dodge has about 200 more hp. I was driving like an old lady to see if I could get greater MPG.

How are you guys getting 22mpg? Are they 2wd trucks with 6 cyl/8spd getting that? Can you get greater with a 5.7 4x4 6 spd?

At the end of the day I need a tk for the kind of work I do and I'm really happy with this tk. I'm surprised mpg on a flat interstate hwy isn't greater.
Well I have the 6cyl 4x4 on 35s I get 18 around town if I pay attention on road trips to Vegas from Socal I can get 24

Op....1st issue is the 68-70+ is your biggest reason.....
Anything over 55 you start hitting much bigger areodynamic issues.....Time of year, winter vs summer fuels, outside temps, type of tires and more can make a diff...In your case as your trk sits, try it at 62 mph and feel the cash fill your pockets..

2012 4.7, 4X4, Quad, 19" rims - I was getting only 16-16.5 until I installed a superchips. With the 87octane map I get 18.5. My start from stand still really effects it

2014 QC Express 5.7 8 sp. 3.92 gears hard tonneau. I was getting 22.8 on the highway, but after installing program from a SC tuner regardless of which tune I use it now only gets 20.6. Although it does seem to have more power, I kinda wish I wouldn't have put the tuner on it.

I do a lot of driving around town (low traffic suburban area) and I'm consistently under 15mpg. Even on the highway, I top out around 17 or 18 if I baby it around 65mph. Really frustrating to get worse mileage in this truck than my stripped down GMC I traded in last year. I feel OP's pain!

I'm sure you've already heard this, but I'll post my experience with my MPG . I have a 2016 with the 5.7 and an 8 speed.

A month after I bought, my fiance and I took a trip to Broken Bow, OK which is about 3.5 hours north. I wasn't hitting too many hills, but I was driving 75 mph against the wind and did have some long inclines on the interstate on the way there. By the time I arrived, I was sitting at 15.7 mpg avg.

When I take the back roads from my house to Shreveport/South Bossier, they're all 45 mph to 55 mph and flat. That's not my normal route so it's not used often. When I take those roads, I always ALWAYS end up gaining nearly 1 to 1.3 mpg avg more. I usually avg around 19.5 but have been as high as 23 mpg. I love filling my truck up with an avg like that. Here's my range at 19.8 mpg.

Which setting do you keep the commander on? Do you keep the eco mode on the truck off? And what engine/tranny do you have?

2017 1500 crew short bed 5.7.

We'll be moving to Myrtle Beach next year from Connecticut. The bed and back seat were full of moving boxes.

Nice easy drive down. Only had to make a couple of moves to get out of the knuckle head packs.

We got 23.5. my best friend has the 2016 same truck. He got 21.7 for the same trip.

2011 4x4 crew cab Laramie. have never in 115000 miles gotten over 17 mpg. do math when fill up per gallons/miles and it is always about 1/2 to 3/4 mpg less than what the dash MPG tells you it is.

The bottom line is that most people aren't. They're either relying on the EVIC (which tends to indicate MUCH better than actual) or they're just kidding themselves.
Keeping in mind that terrain, altitude, vehicle configuration (reg./quad/crew cab, box length, gears, options, etc.), and driving habits all play a pretty major factor.
So I think it's possible, it's just not as common as people would have you believe.

I have a 4x4 Outdoorsman with the 5.7L, 8spd, and 3:92's (Crew cab, 5'-7" box) and my cty/hwy combined is about 16mpg (hand calculated). That's on very flat ground. Not a hill in sight around here.
Straight highway mileage is closer to 18mpg. That's with full synthetic oil, which technically should allow for better fuel mileage.
I'm not a super aggressive driver, but I don't baby it either. Take that how you will.

A friend has a 4x4 Limited with the 5.7L and 3:55's and he's closer to 18-19mpg combined.

In a 2wd 5.7L with the 3:21's on flat ground, a tail wind, and a granny behind the wheel, I can see getting 22mpg.
For the most part I tend to be skeptical when people make fantastical claims about fuel mileage in these trucks. I used to be one of them before I started hand calculating.

**EDIT**
Here's some supporting information from a government site.
They tend to be more accurate than dealer advertised numbers, but are still based on very conservative driving habits, and ideal conditions.

https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=35747

Even these aren't numbers that the average driver here is going to see on a regular basis.

I think a lot of it has to do with your fuel.
Over the last few years ethanol content has steadily increased, which is a big fuel mileage killer.
Virtually all gas stations now have a fairly significant percentage of ethanol in their fuel, whereas even 5 years ago there were many ethanol-free stations out there.
It`s quite honestly ridiculous

Shell premium (92 octane) is the only fuel I know (as of last year) that has no ethanol content. However given some of my fuel mileage calc`s as of late, I`m beginning to wonder if they haven`t slipped some in under the radar.

With 392s, I get about 16-17. More than 50% cruising at 65mph.

6k miles in 4 months. It's almost impossible to get 22 with any setup, on any terrain, unless you're going no faster than 55 and never stop.
