Anyone know the main reason why the 6.4 has 1,000lb more payload? Isn't it basically the same truck? Maybe 6.4 has leaf springs vs the 5.7 coil springs? Thanks

6.4 has coils as well. I have read the reason for this before, but can't remember. Someone will chime in I'm sure.

The curb weight is 52lbs more on the 6.4 and front axle rating 250lbs more. Would love to hear why I only have 2300lbs of payload compared to the 6.4 3300lbs

They want you to spend more.

From a technical aspect, perhaps the 5.7 was barely out performed by the 6.4 at a given weight during a specific test. But I doubt it. I firmly believe it's a marketing game.

How do the axle ratings compare? GVWR on all trucks is just such a joke. Individual axle and tire ratings are so much more important. I'm not near my truck but I'm pretty sure my 6.4 2500's FAWR = 5500# and RAWR is 6500# but GVWR is 10,000#. If the 5.7 has the same axles and a 9000# GVWR it's even more laughable.

I found a couple of The 6.4’s online with my the setup as my 5.7. When I decode the VIN, they come back as the same payload as the 5.7. It says that the GVWR is 9,000 although the ram towing website says 10,000.

10000 gvwr is an option you have to tick off. Or at least it was when I was doing a build a while back. It's all about registration fees.

In Ontario once you surpass 9920lbs (4500kgs) Gross weight, you need a CVOR and commercial registration. Staying below that you can save a lot by not tossing the government more money. The higher payload could appeal more to contractors but if I considered a 2500 gas for a work truck I would stay with the 5.7L. The 6.4 here in Canada commands a $2K premium and larger displacement despite cylinder deactivation will knowingly eat more fuel than the 5.7L under similar circumstances. The 6.4 has better built internals so it would be preferred when towing heavy on a regular basis and a diesel was out of the budget but for me (property maintenance) the 5.7L would be plenty with its 2300lb payload.

I just looked, and the Canada spec for a 2500 6.4 has a 10,000lb gross, where the 5.7 has a 9,000lb gross which accounts for the 1K payload difference but with the 6.4L when using for business purposes you must register (at least here) for your commercial vehicle operator registration (CVOR). The 6.7 diesel also grosses at 10,000lbs so the payload is similar to the 5.7L gas.
