I was driving on a flat road listening to music and suddenly I heard a loud pop, my music shut off and signals wouldn't work. About 7 seconds after, the engine shut off. I checked the fuse box under the dash and I did blow the fuse for the radio and signals, but I had a few extras so I replaced it on the spot. But ever since then, the engine is not getting a spark. I had to get it towed home even with a jump start, it wouldn't turn on. (but it does wind over fine). We replaced the ignition coil, the voltage regulator, and a small ceramic type thing against the firewall. We used a voltmeter to check for a spark starting from the very beginning (battery), and the proper voltage and ohms read thru the entire thing. Also do not see any wiring that has been fried or disconnected even after hours of looking thru it. And also just replaced the spark plugs 2 weeks ago.

So, why did a fuse blow at the same time that all this happened? It seems like a bunch of things happened at once right? Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be? We have spent quite a bit of money buying parts that don't even solve the problem. We tried the screw driver trick to check for a spark after replacing each part, but still no spark can be seen.

I will add more info as I think of it, or as I try different things.

Thanks

(it is an 84 D150 with 318, obviously not fuel injected)

I am getting power to the ballast resistor yes. The last known point that I am getting power is the new ignition coil I got. The distributor cap looks fine but I'm not sure if I'm getting power there. The wiring is not worn down so it seems to me like I am getting power from the coil to the distributor cap.

There is also a tiny cylinder shaped thing beside the ignition coil that has one wire running in and out of it, not sure exactly what it is. Anyone know? Could this be my problem?

i think it is a capacitor. not really important. could check your your ignition module to make sure it is getting a good ground.

Have you tried using a spark tester? another thing, make sure your distributor is actually turning.

blowing a fuse=short to ground, or dead short. possibly a fuseable link has burnt up.

So this is the first post that I find that has something similar to what I am dealing with. Yoox_II, did you ever find the issue? When mine went I did not here a pop or anything at all. As a matter of fact it had been sitting in my drive way for some time and one day it would just not start. I have replaced all of the following.

New distributor
New cap
New rotor
New wire
New ignition module
New ballast
New alternator
New coil

Still no spark even while testing with a spark tester clamped to the engine.

Rotor does turn

I get 6 volts on the coil when wired up and when I remove the positive and test the lead it shows 12 volts.

I tried reinstalling old distributor and old ignition module and still nothing.

I checked all my fuses and I found nothing burnt. What I do not get is that I have voltage in all the right places but still no spark. I feel like I am chasing a ghost.

Anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks in advance....

Gilius
