Been seriously thinking of doing the gears too but I'm a gun guy too. Bought a rifle late last year that would have covered the gear change and then some. Nice toys are expensive.

Guys... guys! You are all looking at this wrong! Both are NOT toys & they both are justifiable. Buying big guns & big trucks is simply preparing for the zombie apocalypse! :laughing1:

Your killing me. I'm going to talk to the shop doing it and see what he thinks now you got me seriously considering the 4.88. Thank all you guys for the input and help it is very appreciated. I'm going to the shop on Monday to have them order the parts I'll keep you guys posted.
Ok, we hijacked your thread from rears & gears to rifles. Lets get back to OP's dillema. Did you decide/get your gears yet? If so, which ratio?

I went with 4.56 lmao. Go ahead lay into me. Haven't got them installed yet either this week or next week I'll let u know
I can't say sht. I have 4.10's. I also don't have anything to tow yet and I go 90 miles a day to/from work, about 1/2 highway. When I retire & get a trailer I'll put the 5.13's in. Wheelie city then.

I will be interested in what kind of fuel mileage you will get & what your rpm's are at 65mph. And of coarse will want to know how much more tug power you have.

I can't wait to hear how you like the 4.56 but in My case I am staying with the stock 33's and I am debating on 4.56 or 4.88 for towing a 12k# trailer, I absolutely HATE the 3.73's

Tuffy, I did a little math. Remember, You HATE 3.73:1. The jump from 3.73s to 4.56s is approx 22.3 %. The jump from 3.73s to 4.88s is approx 30.9 %. The difference btwn the two is roughly 8.6 %. Only you would know how you drive and how often you tow. Hills? Just thought this would help.

Here is a little comparison chart I made, don't look at the first and second gear so much I know this thing won't do 12000 RPM i am just too lazy to take that out.
Anyway with my '16, 6.4L, 3.73 diff and stock 18" wheels/tires when I am pulling my 12,000# trailer I have a hell of a time staying in 4th gear (2400- 2600 rpm) any wind or slight hill at 65 to 70 mph and I am screaming along in 3rd gear and dropping into 2nd on hills.
So to me it looks like if I went from 3.73 to 4.56 I would have the same problem in that 2400 to 2600 rpm range just in 5th not 4th. of course 4th gear would be higher RPM around 3000 which it should stay in.
4.88 on the other hand would be 2600 to 2800 rpm in 5th and might be enough of a bump to keep it there. The downfall of course is unloaded going 80 down the highway. the difference is only 160 rpm's though between the 4.56 and 4.88.
Anyone have 4.88's that has any real-world data loaded and unloaded?

So I am leaning towards 4.88 but haven't quite pulled the trigger yet.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hope this chart helps those of you that are in the same situation I am.

Keep in mind, by going to a 4.56 you are gaining a significant leverage advantage that might be enough to use a lot more 5th. That's exactly how it went for me going from 3.73 to 4.30 in my 6.2.

For what it's worth, when I save up the $$, I am going with 5.13s, but I'm a little nuts that way. I've always been a short gear fan. Ever since I put a 72 tooth back sprocket on my 1972 Hodaka Ace 100 dirt bike. Stock was like 48T. Haha

Also, I'm Ret. LEO. I've been to 2 really nasty truck/trailer flip overs. REALLY NASTY. Once you see that, you will never tow 12k lbs at stupid speeds ever again. Short gears kinda act like a watch dog.
