Just bought a 2015 Ram 1500 Big Horn. I always change the oil in new engines around 500 miles to eliminate metal particles that result from initial break in. We've got 685 miles on the vehicle so far. Changed the oil this weekend. I went to the dash menu for engine oil life, and I had the engine off and the key in Run and pressed the > key to reset the oil life meter. It then came up and said press > to confirm, which I did. But the engine oil life meter did not reset - it still says 93%.

What am I doing wrong?

On my 2013 I have to press the gas pedal 3x rapidly in 10 seconds to reset it.

One time it didn't reset right so I just did it again.

I guess the 2015 is different. I also don't remember a confirm notification.

Press the gas pedal 3 times, to the floor, with the key on and the engine off as stated. It will also work.

Yup, I tried this this morning, and the 3 gas pedal presses does the trick!

Looks like the 2015 software user interface for the oil life has been updated but the functionality has not.

I just chatted with RAM support online, and passed along the issue. They suggested I check my software version and see if there is an update. But they are passing the information along. When I confirm my software version and settings I will chat them back. It may be that there is a setting that changes what mechanism resets the oil clock. But even so the user interface is not picking up on that setting and so there is a software error.

So after you reset oil change when does it know when to come on next time?
MEANING is there a way to set it to say change at 3000 miles or 6000 miles etc?
As every one has a different oil change times

Does it work that way, or is it an algorithm based on miles/hours, engine temp/rpm and other factors (ambient temp, pedal position, Steady RPM vs town miles, etc)?

On a Cadillac I owned, the oil life was based on such an algorithm which essentially was a pretty accurate method (supposedly) worked out by someone (car engineers, or oil companies) to determine remaining oil life under normal conditions. Of course 'normal' varies depending on certain factors, dusty conditions, etc which were articulated in the manual. But under the GM system, the end was extended or shortened based on the algorithm, if the driven mileage was more highway miles vs frequent start/stop around town miles. Not sure if I'm explaining it clearly or not but....

Does anyone know if that's how this system works?

It is a calculation based on everything from your driving style to temperatures, mileage, highway or city driving. It isn't just calculating the miles you drive and that's it. After owning GM's myself I think the Mopars seem to be about exactly the same.
