truck has 500 miles on the dot. On my way home from work the gas cap warning goes off. It was fine in the AM going to work and haven’t put gas in it in like a week. It tells me on the radio screen to put the truck in Park, Shut Engine off and tighten the gas cap. I did that 3 times including removing and blowing into the cap and still no dice. I’m going to see what it does tmrw and make a choice to bring it in. Ugh. I’ve heard a few things being wrong but the craziest one is mice eating the wiring above the tank. I’ve never had an issue with mice or rodents so seriously doubt its that. I’m hoping it’s not water related as i just foam cannoned the truck and powerwashed it good yesterday. But it drive fine this morning on my way to work. I hope it’s just a glitch. Anyone got something I can try?

The other day my front park assist sensor started wigging out saying I needed to wipe it but it was clean. Basically did it again all the way home from work and the next day it was fine. This truck has more glitches then I care for so far. Already had to have the mirror glass replaced bc it was defective.

My 16 gave me a loose cap warning. After tightening took 2 or 3 days to clear. Only had the one in 30k miles..

Yea I figured they werent expensive. But still truck only has 500 miles. And when it says fuel mileage and performance suffers i'm like... really? I already only get like 11-12mpg lol.

Took her to work this AM and no loose cap warning.

Just curious... why did you blow into the cap? For good luck? lol

Is that a code that hangs on for a while before clearing itself, or maybe one that needs to be cleared to go away?

Haha it has a spring and check valve. Maybe it was stuck open or closed? Look on the inside of the cap... I’ll see. I guess it’s habit from blowing into the Nintendo game cartridges as a kid. It must of worked bc the code hasn’t come back! :)

I dont get that but do get the annoying ass check engine light for gas vapor code. Has happened twice in a year.. both times wife fueled up rofl. I got a Bluetooth Car Scanner that stays on the truck and when I need to read codes turn it on with a push of a button and sync with Bluetooth. Very easy to use.

Maybe disconnect the battery cables and touch them together to clear everything?
And fry all the electronics including the PCM? I hope your not referring to the battery positive and ground.

The thing is that it doesn’t store a code. I can’t read the code if it isn’t currently active. When it is active he uconnect will diagnose the code and give me options for a quick fix, if it doesn’t work it says to make an appointment with the dealer.

Well that’s the thing. The gas tank in an intank EFI setup requires pressure in the tank but there is too much and not enough. Low positive pressure in the tank helps push fuel into the pump. Vacuum in the tank makes it harder for the pump to suck fuel in to push out. Too much vacuum can crush a tank and too much pressure can pop a tank. I’ve fought with tank venting on a few custom applications and it can have serious affects on the fuel system and Engine Performance.

So when this **** shows up on the dash I’m like greatttt. I would unscrew the cap and leave it off worst case.

Wonder if the 5th gen Rams won’t use a gas cap, my wife’s 2014 Charger R/T doesn’t have one

When I purchased my truck in 2016 I got the locking gas cap, but earlier this year it failed and got it replaced under warranty.

My '14 5.7 1500 did that once or twice a year. It would throw a code, be grumpy for a few days, then clear itself and go back to normal for 6-10 months. I never did replace the cap.

I bought a 2002 Ram 1500 (gen 3) brand new. Got a check engine light at 500 miles. Took it to the dealer and raised heck. They told me to tighten gas cap. I had never heard of such a thing before, especially 16 years ago! I tightened the cap and a couple of days later the check engine light went out. That happened a few more times over the years. Actually had to replace the gas cap once to clear it. What a pain.

My check gas cap light on my new 2017 Express came on at 400 miles last week. I took the cap off and made sure it was good and tight hoping it would go off in a couple days. Instead the check engine light came on in a couple of days. I've got just over 500 miles on mine right now and am trying to fit a trip to the dealer in when I get a chance. Very frustrating.

If the dealer would have done that, they would have charged you a couple of hundred dollars to blow on the cap.

If you have an 18 why aren't you taking it to the dealer for warranty repair?

The gas cap hasn’t acted up since that night. Not going to take to the dealer unless I have to. They aren’t the quickest and they don’t have loaners so I’m out a car if they decide to want to keep it. Since the error hasn’t come back im going to leave it be and if it comes back and never leaves I’ll take it to the dealer. Truck would have had to be in for 5 seperate times if I took it in when the gas cap freaked out, all the times the parking sensors errors out etc. who had time for that lol.

Oh, ok I missed that the issue hasn't returned so I agree with you no sense in wasting time at the dealer. The 2003 Durango my daughter drives has had check engine light for over a year with a code that includes possible gas cap. New gas cap didn't resolve it, but I don't care at this point until it has to go through NJ emissions inspection next year.
