BW 44-47 (manual floor shifter)

Iv read the manual but it only specifies the oporation for the electronic shifting transfer case (BW 44-46). What is the correct/best procedure to go from 4x4 high to 4x4 low with the 44-47? I have always just put the trany in nutral and shifted from 4x4 high to low.... waited a few seconds then put the trany in drive while holding the break firm. Going into 4x4 low this way is is easy. When i want to go from 4x4 low to high i do the same. Put the trany in neutral and shift back to 4x4 low or nutral then 2x4. All while firmly holding the break. But going out of 4x4 low always seems to need a LOT more push.

Thats the correct way to shift. I like to do the shift on a very slow roll whenever possible. It helps the gears mesh easier and subsequently the lever has less resistance.

Do you shift out of 4 x 4 low into 4 x 4 high during a slow roll? In that case would you throw the transmission in neutral first and then throw the 4 x 4 low in the 4 x 4 hi while it still slightly rolling ?

Yes, thats what I do. I picked up that technique when I had a Jeep Comanche and my JK Wrangler.

Thank you sir. I just worry about ******* things up when using 4x4 low. **** can go wrong fast with a direct chain drive transfer case.

I use the slow-roll method on all my 4x4s as well. My '67 K10 will NOT shift in or out of 4x4 at all unless moving a little. By "a little", I mean about the speed of normal walking.

Ram electronic and manual transfer cases are exactly the same internally; both are chain driven. The only difference is how they are actuated.

slow roll is best. like barely creeping as in 5 mph is too fast. All the NV jeep transfer cases specify to do so. Can't imagine a reason where it wouldn't work.

I got myself into a tough situation in my Wrangler once. I was stuck and there was no way I could maintain enough momentum where I was to shift into 4low quick enough before being stopped again. Of course, where I was stuck was the spot where the shift fork was not moving into 4low (any harder pulling on the shifter and I think I would have broke it).

Had a buddy with a strap pull me up just enough so that the shift fork could engage 4 low and I was on my way again. lol

Moral of the story, if you think it might be a good idea to engage 4LO do it before its too late lol.

Used it again today.....tried going in and out of 4 low today while rolling slightly..its definitely much easier. This method is what I use when i know that all i need is 4 high but was not sure if it was OK with 4 Low. Just have to be quick ....but not to quick. Going out of 4 low was so much easier that I actually pased righ by neutral and 4x2 and went straight into 4 high. LOL.

Which Transfer case is the best for traction pulling light load in 4wd high? And can you **** into high 4wd on the fly on the 2500 HD trucks

I think the manual says up to 45mph or somthing. I wont do it at nything fastet than 10-15mph. Thats just me though. And IMO a direct chain drive is a “better” 4x4 but one that has clutches (like the 1500’s) is much “safer”

So the shift on the fly for the clutched transfer makes it possible for 45 mph and under on the 1500 where as you would need to slow more for the chain drive on the fly since slippage if you will can occur with clutches. Speaking of which on the fly for both trucks would be high 4wd.

I haven't had the need for 4x4 low, but routinely shift out of 4 high to 2wd while traveling, usually no more than 60 kph.
I normally shift into 4 high before I'm on the move or when coming to a stop when I think conditions warrant 4 high.

This actually has me thinking I should be testing 4 low once in a while....will have to in the near future.
