What's the deal with with my 2016 2500 with the 6.4 Hemi smoking and sounds like it has no oil in it on start up after it sets over night. Have already took it to dealerships where I bought it and another dealership both told me that it is normal for it to smoke after it sets!! I myself think it is not normal to use a quart of oil between changes . The truck only has 19500 miles on it.

I have the same truck 2016 ram 2500 with the 6.4. I don't have that issue at all. I have about 22000 miles on it and it's never low on oil between oil changes.

Mine will give a puff of blue smoke once in a while on start up, and have a few customers with the same issue.
How many miles to using a quart of oil?

Mine has done it 2 or 3 times at start up. Never shows up low on the dip stick. It wouldn't be completely out of line to lose a 1/2 quart or so within the first 5,000 miles, but you should not be seeing that kind of loss now. I would keep on them about this & keep a record of the times & dates you have seen them.

bad valve stem seals can cause this. the ticking is because the lifters are bleeding down.

My truck has done similar things maybe 8-10 times, but I haven't noticed any oil usage. It also seems more likely to happen if I let the MDS system activate, normally I use the tap shifter to lock the MDS out. If the symptoms where repeatable in my truck I would take it in to the dealer. My truck has 24K miles on it.

Mine burned probably a quart of oil over the first 3,000 or so miles and ONE time I saw some smoke on start up when the truck was still pretty brand new. That was it. Since hitting about 3000-3500 miles it has stopped burning oil and have not since seen a single puff of smoke. The truck runs very smooth at all times. Doesn’t sound like OP’s issue is normal. Dealer probably just doesn’t want to deal with you. I’d try another dealer or start getting tough with the one you’ve been going to.

Got 49k on mine it has smoked twice when started but thats it doesn't use any oil either. I wonder what oil is in it, people think oil is oil but not so. Have them change oil and use PUP 0W40 it calls for.

62k on mine and never uses oil. I've heard it clatter 2 times and saw smoke once. Each time it was parked headed downhill. If the dealer is doing your oil changes, they may be putting in what's meant for the 5.7. The last time I took mine for an oil change they did that and I had them switch it for the right oil before I left. I've done all my own oil changes since that happened.

Same as some above, 3 times lifter clatter, and one smoke at startup when parking downhill for a few days. all under 2k miles. Maybe used 1/2 quart before 1st oil change at 4K. All fine after that 12K miles. not normal.

extended periods of non use and my 18 PW sounds crappy on startup. after an overnight sit cold start, i sometimes get minor smoke from tailpipe.

at 3000 ,miles now and i feel like i see less smoke but still have crappy startup and terrible metallic exhaust noises under throttle

Until about 5k mi., mine was a smokescreen randomly at startup. I have about 32k mi. on it now and no issues. I switched to Amsoil at 1500 miles. It's never shown any oil usage on the dipstick. It puffed at startup probably 3 times since then. I've worked the hell out of this motor with 10-14k on my race trailer several times cross-country and it just begs for more. This 6.4 is a bad **** and does not get the credit it deserves. I don't beat on it, but I definitely don't baby it either. It loves to rev. I'm not a fan of that, but I've learned that it performs best when you let it sing! Let those 392 glorious cubic inches loose and you'll be impressed. I continue to be every time I tow with it.

When mine was brand new, it did puff a few times on start-up, after it had been sitting short periods of time after being run.

However, it's never lost oil, has not puffed at start up for a long time and is quiet at start up even after sitting a week.

I'd push to have it addrssed.

I have a 2016 Ram 2500 with 6.4 does not use any oil but during the summer I will notice a puff of smoke but with that said my commute to work takes me about 3 minutes I normally only notice it if that's all I've been doing is driving the truck to work, so when I drive it and it gets to operating temps I do not notice any smoke. My truck at this time has 16600 miles.
