I'm new to the forum and love my 2004 Ram Sport with the 5.7 I just got another 5.7 to build and want to upgrade with 6.1 heads better cam, pistons, etc. Want to build to 700hp. Is it possible or trash the idea. I do not want to use spray, want raw horsepower. May consider a turbo.
I don't have deep pockets to complete so it's going take some time.

To get 700 you’re gonna need to definitely stroke and forced induction. I would start with a 6.1 or 6.4 engine as a base and go from there.

I had an 08 Charger with a 5.7 based 392 stroker and with tuning and fine parts selection I was able to get 500 rear wheel torque and horsepower all naturally aspirated. This was pretty much the limit for that engine both power and structural integrity-wise. If I had added forced induction on top I could probably get closer to around 650 or so wheel horsepower but the engine block wouldn’t last long.

I’m sorry to tell you, but, you’re gonna need deep pockets for that kind of power, regardless of vehicle/brand.

Yep it’s definetly possible with a 6.4 stroker and 10-15lbs of boost. But it’s no where near cheap. Expect at LEAST 6 grand for an engine built to handle it, 2-5 grand for a transmission to handle it, and then 3-6 grand for a turbo or supercharger. You’ll need a complete fuel system upgrade. You’ll probably want to ditch the 545rfe and go with a different trans altogether, a good economical choice is a stage 3 built 46rh/re. That’s what I’m building now for my stroker. I fully understand money being an issue, I would build a stroker engine first, then swap a trans in to hold the power, and then add boost. Hemi Truck Club has a bunch of great guys that are running boosted 3rd gens. They have lots of knowledge with the quirks of running high horsepower and they are eager to share it. Good luck!

^^^^ yup he knows. I also had to have my NAG1 built up, wapped in a better rear diff and gears, fresh new suspension and better brakes. Be prepared to spend a lot for this entire build. It’s not just and engine, it’s the whole drivetrain, brakes, suspension and tuning too.

I just read through all 30 pages of his build and he would be the man to contact if you have any questions.

Thanks! I’m not familiar with boosted setups yet, just some basic info I’ve caught onto reading through other guys boosted build threads. I can point you to several people who have a lifetime of info on them though. The guy that handles my tuning has a 6.4 stroker with a single turbo pushing around 700-800 crank hp. The turbo is a new setup but he’s running 11.63 quarter mile on his old supercharged setup with more coming from the turbo swap.

That sounds like he’s got at least $20K in parts and such in his truck.

Hell, with my Charger I had easily $12-15K in it or more for my 500 RWHP/TQ. Luckily that was deployment money :biggun:

Hey guys I really appreciate all the input, I was hoping to put maybe $4,000 or so in the motor, tranny later an already had a good reared set up that was passed on to me. So I can't afford $20,000 anyway plus I was not racing it anyway. I just wanted a great looking sounding engine.

Thanks again for your time.

$4k won’t get you 700hp but should be able to at least add 100-150 depending on the mods (decent cam with non-MDS lifters, LT headers & full exhaust, tuner with tuning: HEMIFEVER or Jay Greene, CAI, Peddle Commander to start with), and how you source them (forum “for sale” section, eBay, craig’s list, Facebook, group buys, sales, etc).

He’s got an 04. Peddle commander and MDs isn’t on there. A cam and headers aren’t gonna get another 100-150 hp, maybe 50-60 at most

My bad, I read right past that.

6.1 heads, 6.1 intake (cleaned up internally and TB throat opened up to 85 or 90mm), larger TB, cam, headers and a good tune and you got a good setup for at least 100 hp.

5.7 heads flow up to 500-600 hp just fine no need for 6.1s. No need for the 6.1 intake unless you just want looks, or spray the truck intake performs better it’s just ugly..

I think if I ever build this truck any further(on fence about it) I would do a 5.7 block cleans up with a good piston/ rod combo an do a front mount turbo.

These are the heads I want to get: http://www.highhorseperformance.com/HHP_BES_All_5_7L_HEMI_HHP_57PPH_p/hhp-57pph.htm

Again, just watch those core charges. Once you get the core back, that's money that can go right back into other parts like cam and supporting parts (lifters, pushrods, 6.1L oil pump and timing chain setup). You still would have funds left over for headers, tuner and TB.

I've already got some of the supporting mods like headers (3/4 instead of long tube) and TB. I have to stick with NA since I'm in CA still, so no boost for me. Yet...

I think there is a supercharger for sale on HTC for about 4-4.5k, complete procharger setup

700 hp from a 5.7 based G3 hemi….

Yeah it can be done. (Chris I’ll try not to be too winded…LOL)

A stock bore and stroke 5.7 will make 700Na Hp at 7800-8500 Rpms…now you just need the $ to get it up there, keep in mind that 700Hp from a 5.7(345ci) hemi is 2.02 Hp per Inch. Irony is when these Hemis hit the streets in 03 , the Nascar boys were making 2.02-2.10 Hp per inch with heads that flowed with in 20CFM as the stock 03 heads….but they could spin those engines to 7500+ are beloved 5.7 has some issues when it comes to swinging them that HIGH .

My niece Caroline’s 383 (6.3l based 5.7 ) in her 2010 Challenger is making between 1.6-1.7 Hp per inch but that engine spins about 7200-7500 thru the traps@ 128-129 MPH

Now 700 hp from say a 6.7l (410) based 5.7 would be 1.7 Hp Per inch and would spin around 7000 to make 1.7 Hp per inch…still cost $ but less of it.

Leave the 6.1 heads to the SRT resto guys, the Eagle heads out of the box, off of the truck motor are better heads by almost 30CFM and the exhaust side doesn’t stall between 300 & 500 lift.

For the budget minded type….it’s cheaper with a turbo or shot of NOS. but either one of those options needs good pistons and rods, as for the crank those 1000hp turbo stock bottom end LS Chevys, their crank is made out of the same junk as our 03-08 hemis

The trouble is once you start making hp the transmission becomes junk. I recommend starting with the mods needed to support your hp goals. Fast trucks are very addictive.
Heres a picture of my newly completed cog drive.
