As you can tell by the title I just recently put Firestone trans force AT 2s on my PW and can’t stand them. They’ve been on for about 12 hours but I already know that I’m not satisfied. I know my tire guy will take them back.

I was trying to be cost conscious as well as need conscious. Either way I’m not happy with the looks or performance of the tire. I had BFG KO 2s previously and they rode great. Maybe I should go back to these? Do you guys have any suggestions for a tire that performs well in the wet and snow and that i wont have to replace every 15k?

I know another tire thread might be frustrating for the seasoned pros here but im looking for some specific guidance.

Thanks!

Peter

Maybe I should also add that the tire rides too hard for my liking. I’m looking for a softer tire I guess

I went from the Transforce tires (which I hated) to KO2's and I'm very happy with the change.

Also, make sure the tire shop doesn't or hasn't over inflated the tires to 80 psi based on current OEM data. That high of pressure really sucks with any tire.

I put on 35” Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ’s and have been extremely happy with them so far. They are a little loud at 65-70 mph or so but that is to be expected out of a mud terrain. What do you use your truck for? Or more specifically, what are you trying to get out of a tire? That will help with recommendations.

I have the same and I am extremely happy as well. They already great in sand mud or snow, they take some getting used to on sheer ice but great in slush. I pull a 6500lb TT and have no issues at all. They are a bit loud around 60-70 mph, but not unbearable and the dual exhaust I have on is loud enough to dround out most any tire noise.

Honestly i feel pretty dumb. I knew what i wanted and got talked into the firestones. He will take them back which is the good thing.

Im going to put 315 70r 17 BFG KO2s on it and Ill be happy. thats what the firestones replaced. I was looking for longevity and winter performance. The Firestones totally changed the ride of the truck, even with 55 PSI in them I am still not happy.

Ill have the New KO2s by Tuesday

I was looking for longevity and wet/ winter performance. I mostly do highway driving and then some mud and field driving. I going back to 315 70 r 17 KO2s. that should make me happy!

What are you guys really getting for mileage out of a tire? After these I am thinking E rated AT's. I ran those on my half ton so that I could tow and for wear and never had an issue (guess I like a firmer ride). I have 10+K on the Duratracks and they show no real wear (with 60 miles of tracks at Big Bend, and yes they did chunk a little as I wanted to see what the truck could do). I keep seeing posts where people are claiming 15-20K per set and yes I am in the south so that snow flake comes into play very irregularly. I run 65 psi both ends and have no cupping or any other complaints about the tires outside of them being D rated. I run C rated KM2's on the Scout and had the NTB Cooper branded AT's in E rate and loved them on the 1/2 ton Ram. I wanted to install a set on the wife's GX470 but went with what she needs vs. what I wanted to look cool.

I bought my PW used with 21k miles on it. The KO2s were at 6/32nds when i bought it. I put another 3000 miles on it before it was inspected in my state. At that point all four corners were cupping and the center of the tires were bald. When i picked the truck up it was running 65 in all four tires. I think that too much

When the new KO2s go on i will be running them at a lower psi. Maybe 45-50 when not towing. Ill get the AEV procal to combat the low TPMS light which will drive me crazy. I have a few guys near me that claim they get 45k out of the KO2s. We shall see what i get. I do about 20k miles a year so I will know quickly if they are going to last.

Can you give a little more detail on how the ride changed?

It has been my experience that BFG KO2 don't last on heavy 3/4 ton trucks.

It has been my experience that BFG KO2 don't last on heavy 3/4 ton trucks.

The K02s that were on the truck to start were 315 70r 17s
the Firestones are 285 70r 17s

Idk if the wider tire absorbs more? or the compound of rubber is different? ( i know the Firestones are a commercial tire so they are harder) or both of these qualities contributed to a totally different ride but it changed the ride characteristics completely.

I can feel even the slightest of bumps and it seems like the truck "rolls"more in corners. Maybe its using more of the suspension because the tire is harder? As for the feel or the road, the KO2s would roll over anything and absorb, the Firestones transfer all of the feeling into the truck.

It makes for a very bumpy/rattling drive. I uses this as a family vehicle and have two children in the truck at all the time. I can see my 9 month old bouncing in the back seat now with the Fire Stones, LOL. I even aired them down a bit and it doesn't help. the tire is just hard. I'm not saying it is a bad tire it just doesn't fit my requirement. Ride quality out weighs longevity for me.

I hear two things about the KO2s, they either last 15-20 thousand miles or the last 45-50 thousand miles. Like i said before, i do about 20-24k miles a year so ill know quickly if they are going to last me a year or not.

The Firestones are being removed tomorrow. Ill be happy when the KO2s are back on.

Thanks for the reply. I asked because the stock Goodyears are pretty squishy and I have been wondering how bouncy / harsh the ride would become if I upgrade to a stiffer sidewall E class tire in the future.

The E rating has to do with the ride but it also has to do with construction of the tire. The KO2s I went with are E rated and so are the Firestones but I wouldn't put them in the same ball park you know?
