Did I break something ? Shifting too fast? Possible?

Hey folks. So a few weeks back I had to do a U turn and was worried I would impede cars so put the nose in a side street and put it in reverse. Once I put it in reverse I hit the gas and it made a vibration and the truck didn’t move for a second. Like it was slipping. Put it in drive and hit the gas and it did the same thing.

This was in dry driving conditions

Did I not wait long enough to hit gas?

Did I break something ?

I highly highly doubt you broke something just putting it in reverse. Did you throw it into reverse while it was still moving forward perhaps? I know that's a common thing people do with column shifters? I doubt you did any " damage ". Does it happen when you go from park to drive then give it immediate gas?

I came to a stop, put it in reverse and quickly tried to accelerate. I felt a vibration and the truck didn’t move for a second. Then it caught and moved. Flipped it to D, hit the gas and it did it again.

I didn’t wait long before putting into R and hitting gas or D and hitting gas. It only did it that only time. So now I select the gear and give it a second.

I’m just worried I shaved off all the gears in my rear LOL. Or messed up the driveshaft or transfer case etc....

It's all computer controlled. Something may have broke, but I doubt you are the cause.

I’ll try and describe it better lol.

So I stopped. Put in reverse and without much delay hit the gas. It felt like when you run over those rumble strips on the highway. Just not as harsh for a second and than it moved. Put it in Drive and hit the gas right away and same thing.

I wasn’t flooring it by any means.

Almost like the gears weren’t catching in time for my acceleration and gear change of this makes sense ha ha

I assume you’re still driving it? How does it shift now, under normal driving conditions?

Have you checked the fluid level in the transmission? Does it shift okay now? Is it a ZF 8 speed or the Chrysler 6 speed RFE?

8 speed. I haven’t tried to duplicate it. Just putting around city. I’ll get to try it tomorrow

You may want to check for a transmission leak above the pan. There is a STAR case for leaks on these transmissions. Low fluid level will cause the issues you have encountered.

I checked my driveway this morning and noticed oil under my truck.

Ok. Upon further inspection it looks like the CV is leaking ?

14,000 miles and a leaky shock? I’m seriously thinking I got a Friday trucks..... just little things here and there. Like the plastic surrounding my door handle is popping out.

Your need to ID the source of that leak or take it to someone who can. Looks like it's coming from somewhere up above and going into that cv joint and getting slung around by the joint. Could be a leaky strut but I doubt it

I’m gonna call the dealer Tomorrow and book an appointment. I’m sure it’s “normal”

Interesting this us mentioned.

My truck feels "choppy" when backing up an incline. I just figured it was losing traction, but it does kind of feel like what op was describing happening to his truck.

I haven't felt it going forward, incline or not. Only moving in reverse. No evidence of fluid leaks, though. Does the star case have any other symptoms I should look for?

If you get a shutter in reverse they will say it’s normal. My 2010 Wrangler did it and my Ram does it too. It’s a mopar thing i guess.

I am amazed at that what is normal for these trucks are things Ive never experienced in any other vehicle before

They really are in their own class lol

Since its on the driver side that can be from a oil change. Maybe some oil spilled when filling. Who does your oil changes?

That strut is leaking, probably when or at least more when driving because its working up and down. The way that it leans in slightly the oil is dripping down on the cv shaft, being blown back a little by the wind from driving, sometimes when turning that's why there is a lone spot on top of the boot. I would request they change both as you are supposed to change suspension parts in pairs. If they agree maybe you could get them to install upgrades if you pay the difference. It may have been Friday at the strut factory but FCA doesn't build struts, they just install them.
