I've been seeing some of you have done the Electric Fan mod and it looks like a good idea. I'm wondering how it actually works and what is needed (part number?) to do the mod? I read that its basically plug'n play but that I may need to reprogram the computer to activate the fan at a different temperature. Is that true? Also how well does the fan work at keeping the engine from overheating? I'm in New England and the weather can be harsh at times with temps in triple digits during the summer and well into the negative temps in the winter. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank

I don't have the part number handy, but it's the e-fan from a V6 Ram. Most people seem happy with the TYC fan from Amazon. I don't believe you HAVE to reprogram for a lower temp, but a lot of people are also running a lower temp thermostat and was the fan to come on t a temp to match that. Do a search on e-fan and you should find the 2-3 threads on it.

i saw the video and the install is easy but my main concern is if i need to reprogram the computer for the fan to come on at a lower temp. in my research i also came across some people have acquired a pretty big vibration when the e-fan kicks on.

The fan will come on around 220* without reprogramming or running your own fan switch to the fan. If you turn your A/C on you can usually get your fan to come on sooner. I ran it this way in the summer for over a month without any issues before getting a programmer.

The vibration is due to people getting a TYC or aftermarket fan and the quality or luck of the draw that comes along with those products. I have the OEM Denso unit and 0 vibration. :D

Do you have a part number for the OEM fan?

I recently did the conversion and have the TYC, no vibration. I also did the 180T-stat at the same time. I also run a Trinity T2 with custom 93 Octane tune from Hemifever, which factors in both mods.

It's my suggestion that you buy the aftermarket fan locally in case it needs to be returned due to vibration or having broken mounting tabs right out of the box.

The one I ordered came today. It wasn't broken and hopefully I can get some time this weekend to install it.

Well I had a chance to install the e-fan today. Took me about 30 minutes to do. It was real easy. As I mentioned in a previous post, I went with the Dorman brand fan because I had pretty good luck with their products in the past. Bought it off Ebay for $107 shipped. I read the customer reviews on it and a lot of people said they were opening the boxes and finding damaged and broken ears on the shroud. I took my chances and I'm glad I did. Mine was not damaged in any way and I also saw that the little resistor or whatever it is that you plug into was securely mounted to the shroud in the stock location so there were no dangling wires I had to tie wrap anywhere so that was good. Now I did buy a 180° t-stat but I didn't install that yet as I wanted to see what the temperature's would be beforehand. Now a lil run down of my road test. Today my area in CT was in the mid 80's and was pretty humid. My first road test was about 15 to 20 minutes in city and town driving stopping at lights and stop signs with moderate traffic and with NO air conditioning on. The digital temp gauge in my message display got up to about 220° before the fan kicked on which brought the temp back down to about 206° and without any vibration what so ever. My second road test was with the air conditioning on which kept the fan running and the temp between 199° and 206° whether I was on the highway or back roads and that's just about where the temps ran with the clutch fan in place. I'm going to run it without putting the 180° t-stat in for the week to see how it goes. On a side note though, with the e-fan mod, it does open up the engine bay quite a bit which will definitely make it easier to work on anything when the time comes.

I read the reviews on that fan and a lot of people were saying they were getting a vibration with it when it kicked on. I believe that fan has a few balance clips on the blades that you can move around to try to stop the vibration IF it does have a vibration. Some said they dont get any vibration at all. The Dorman one I bought doesn't have any of the clips but it also doesn't get any vibration at all. It really is a crap shoot when you mail order anything. Good luck. And it really is easy to install. The hardest part it loosening the fan clutch but on the water pump.

I've heard some say it is not plug and play.

Just installed mine on my 2015. Got an used OEM fan from a wrecking yard and since it was damaged I got it for real cheap. I re-glued the broken part and will see how it hold up.

The only thing that wasn't plug and play for me was the plug. The V6 fan I got came with the plug in a different location and the truck harness couldn't reach the plug. I used an hacksaw blade to cut the connector away from the fan resistor plate (resistor not used) and wrapped the connector with heat-shrink. Took me an hour because I had to decide what to do for the plug.

You can see the connector in question in this video from 8:50

Here's the final product, if I like how the efan perform I will eventually clean up everything (hide my active shutter module too). No vibration and cool the truck quicker than the AC fan.

Rock Auto's write up says they get them from various manufacturers, so no telling what brand you'll get.
