No expert, but I will tell you this... I had the original factory Goodyear Wranglers SR-A's and the truck felt good. I picked up a set of Sumitomo Encounter HT's about 3 weeks ago to replace the Goodyear's. They were like 5 lbs heavier per tire but they road really good! Soft plush ride, silent on the highway, loved them, but I DID feel a difference in the truck feeling sluggish on takeoff, felt like it worked harder on the highway and mileage dropped.
Fast forward to last week, belt slipped in one of the Sumi's. Shop replaced it and that one couldn't be balanced. Road force balancing couldn't stop the highway vibration. Worried about quality, long term durability, so I used their %100 refund and the shop gave me 3 recommendations. Checked Consumer Reports and Firestone Destination LE2's were #3 and said "good" for rolling resistance. Interesting tidbit = Tire Rack have the Sumitomo Encounter HT's as a TOP rated tire. Consumer Reports rates them at the bottom!
Fresh set of Firestone Destination LE2's and the truck had pep back in it's step. Quiet, good ride but the truck feels like it rolls out easier. It also feels like glides farther and easier when I let off the gas. The Firestone is 4lbs heavier than stock and the Sumi's were 5lbs. Not scientific, but this tells me that rolling resistance plays a bigger roll then I expected. I think a bad combination of rolling resistance and upsizing with a larger tire could add up more than you think.
ALSO! This makes the second time I purchased a highly rated Tire Rack tire that was garbage! This is also the 2nd time I paid for a month member ship from Consumer Reports and THEIR tire rating was NOT garbage. So... If there's a tire your interested in, I would be happy to look it up for you and or compare it with others and show you what they say since I'm paid for the month with them.
